Buddy list add request.
« on: April 14, 2007, 06:20:50 am »
Thru other posts i have posted, i have come up with an idea for the buddy list.

My idea is that instead of allowing any smoe to add you without a reason, why not make the adding of a buddy require that person being added to be informed that they have been added. Also, the person being added must allow the person adding them to add them, either using a simple yes/no pop-up like the trade request and duel challenge, or thru some random new method. Any person with Yahoo Im, knows what im talking about, and im sure that other Im's use this method as well (just not all).

The reason i find it needed in the game is due to just plain privicy. What if i dont want someone to know im online? Currently anyone can add anyone, and i have added person's just to see if they are logged on at a certain time or another.

another feture could be a thing like the yahoo im where you can request to be "invisible" or appear offline when you are infact online.

I would also like it so that if you remove a person from your buddy list, and they have you on thiers, that your name will be removed from thiers as well.

Another intresting addition would be to have a list of who has you on thier buddy list, could be a sub-window from the buddy list, veiwable thru /cmd such as "/buddy_added_window".

Haha, and then the guy runs in to you, realizes he's blocked and hates you forever.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I often use the buddy list to find people I've never met but I want to (comes in really handy, I'll tell you).
I don't really see the point in this, I think it'll end up just making one more annoying window that pops up when you don't want it to :P

Ah, maybe not the "invisble" thing, but i think that the rest of the post is very valid. You may have it lucky, you get along well with others (may :P) but not every is so lucky, I dont feel like being tracked by someone in an rp, or just so they know if im even online during a certain time.

One thing this suggestion brings to mind is that /ignore should make you undetectable by the person ignored. You can keep the name on the buddy list but it just never lights up if the person is ignoring you. I think that the opposite need not be true so that if you are ignoring someone on your buddy list you can still see if they are on unless they are ignoring you back. You should not be able to /tell someone you are ignoring however it may already be like that.
I got slightly off track there but it all followed logically, I think.

umm? You mean beable to choose to have the window pop-up requesting if you want to be added? I agree. Not that big of a change, and its only logical.

What if the person your adding isnt online? And i tend to use my buddy list just to hunt down people, people that i may have never met, who wouldnt be inclined to hit the 'yes'. Maybe a better idea is you get a popup saying you have been added to bobs buddy list. You then have the of typing /ignore bob and go with Bilbous's idea.

This idea is to prevent such things. You "hunting" people down tends to lead to harrasment, or is used for something sumilar. and indeed, if you never met them before how can you be buddys with them? The proper thing to do to hunt someone down would be to use the /who cmd you might get lucky.

Well i dont want to get lucky, I want to know when they are on. If for example they are part of the same RP and i want to talk to them even though we havent met.

1) same rp then the person would add you on request
1b) How do you know them if you never met them for said rp?
2) how can you talk to them when they are offline
3) group chat is thier for a reason.

This wish is to prevent harrassment of players thru tracking of online activity. Such as what you are doing, (though dont admit to).

Yes i do track people. Because if I told i should meet so and so for somthing and they are offline and i want to be alerted when they are online so i can meet them the best way to do that is with the buddy list.

IF there are really player tracking others down to see if they are online so they can go and harass that player... well there is another trick for that, though not as easy as the Buddy list but still fairly simple... The /who "player name" way, and because you can use the arrows so you don't have to typ it every time... well  I think that's pretty much the same thing with a little (really it does not take that uch time, just do it every 5 min to see if the plaeyr is on ang Go Harass!) extra work.

1b) How do you know them if you never met them for said rp?

Small example... Socks sits in the Broken door, a nice fenki enters, Socks checks her out [reads description], Socks approaches... {DARN, Dinner time! or something you really can't miss in RL, /me quickly adds the name to my buddy list]
This not because Socks knows the name, but he saw her and wanted to get to know her better. But because in Planeshift, or any other online RPG [or that fancy big word with 2 Ms] , it's hard to recognize anyone by sight, and because I'm in RL already very bad with names, I add that name to my buddy list, and If I see someone on my buddy list in the game, I check the Descr. and usualy my memory jogs back and Hey, I can go and have a convo :P

[So in short, it con come in handy when you have 'seen'someone, from a distance but for some reason could get their name[IC I mean], then you can use to name in the buddy list for recognition ;)]

Its is more evert to use the /who cmd every 5 mins.. then to add a person to a buddy list and see if they are online or not. Why you deem this wish uselss is beyound me, other then you dont want someone to know that you added them since you could poss. like to harras ppl. inwhich case you should be banned anyway.

This request is needed. Its useful. and optional. a perfect combination. This tool is ofcourse very OOC and doesnt affect ic actions. It will limit harrasment, and tracking of players, and make ps slightly better with it. Those that dont want such a thing only wish to not have it inforced so that they themselfs can harras players. What is a simple question pop-up for a add to buddy list request? even the pop-up could be optional and thus wouldnt affect the person playing.

How can you be a friend to someone that isnt your friend? :) basicly, it comes to logic that if your in an rp, those involved would be a) grouped or b) be on longer then 2 mins in said rp to add ppl thru the request window, and thats with the request selected "on".

True, if a person wants to harrase someone enough they could use the /who cmd 500 times however, it wouldnt be werth it to most ppl and they would just end up forgetting about them. It is also true that you could just use a pad of paper and write down someones name, later adding them if they log off mid way in an rp or w/e. Chat and sytstem logs or savable to your comp, and you can review them anytime you want.

And with that, i still see not reason why my idea is a bad one. How does it affect the game negitivly? How would it impeded a player? If anything, it only improves the game, and players. It would discourage harrassment, and encourage a bit more privicy.
