Actually, other than dying from excessive fall damage, these stories sound pretty good to me.  :-)

It is going to be a bit bewildering to enter a new world and not know anyone or anything about it.  That is half the fun of playing imho.  I think PS could use a bit more guidance for new players, but overall I think these stories are consistent with what I've experienced in other games.

Perhaps disabling 'fall damage' for the first 10 game hours could help a bit... although being a bit unrealistic of course.

Of course it would be account-based the game hours measure, not character-based.

They already removed fall damage, basically.  It used to be that you'd die from falling three feet!  Just jumping on a spot would cost you half your HP points.

I just nerfed fall damage some more.  The fall threshold is now 5 meters, and dmg is reduced overall by about 30%.  Let me know how that goes and if it eliminates the most stupid fall deaths for newbies.

Is it supposed to be possible for a newbie to jump down the well? The thugs were one of my favorite trainers. It has been impossible for the last few weeks. I just managed it now but I hit an obstruction half way to the first platform and took 2/3 damage, if I had not I think I would have died.

hi  :)
i just started last friday and i spent the first hour getting external errors and game lags/freezes (i read somewhere in the forums that it probably was caused by my video card, or lack thereof  ;D)...

anyway, i got to play for a straight hour without interruptions and i spent it searching for the tavern (harnquist wanted me to bring him apples). i wandered through town and i found myself in the sewers where i killed a rat and ran away from a fanatic... i got bored and decided to try my luck searching for the tavern. the game suddenly crashed again so i had to stop. maybe i can try again this week...  :)

ahhhh, the memories. I remember spawning, then in moments I discovered the Tavern. I was quite pleased with myself so I decided to run back down the stairs to see what other fantastic things I could find, imagine my suprise when I ended up dead at the bottom and quickly discovering the Death Realm. Then that consumed the rest of my 1st hour online. Well, signifigantly more than my 1st hour actualy  X-/

I started playing this game quite early on and it was quite unusual to log into a MMORPG for the first time and not immediately start killing rats :), although they fixed that later!

There were gems to collect back then as I remember, and they were far and few between.

My first post shall be about my first experience with this game.

After downloading the game, installing, and starting it up, I was rather annoyed by the fact that the game wasn't fullscreen, as was taller than my screen was, so the bottom bit got cut off. Well, I started the character creation, decided to go the custom way, found that this game already had a lot more depth than I realized, something I enjoyed very much so. Not to mention the music was strangely enjoyable.

Once in-game, my computer lagged massively. At the best getting 3 frames a second, it would still often lock completely for about 10 seconds. I recalled glancing over the recommended system specs of a 2ghz processor and a gig of ram, which my laptop barely meets. I decided to deal with the horrible gameplay due to lack of decent computing power, and just continue on trying to play. I wandered around the town for a little, and then found a pathway out that led to some large tower where I wandered around until I eventually got too lost to find my way out. I attacked a monster that looked like it would kill me thinking I would go back to town, and ended up in the DR. I spent a few minutes in here until I got completely stuck, called for help to get unstuck, not knowing about the /unstick command, but it stated that there was no one available. I let the help request sit for 10-15 minutes and just exited the game.

At this point, normally I would've just gave up, but I decided to read the forums and see what the game was really about. All that I've read, the game being in development, and the very heavy RP-based community just makes me want to keep giving this game a chance. Well, the next day (this morning) I read more on the forums and decided to attempt to let my laptop try. Conveniently I found the settings and went fullscreen, which helped a little for my wee laptop, but gameplay is still shotty for me. I decided to start a new character and at a later point get my first out of the death realm. I logged in and spoke with the NPC smith, whose name I cannot recall, and asked for a quest. He wants some steel, and this character I wanted to be a merchant type, but I have no money to buy a pickaxe. [e sad. I wandered around until I found the sewers, killed a rat, rather happily, and went looking for more one-eyed beasts. Every rat after the first, I attacked, and then suddenly stopped attacking and couldn't start again. Got lost in the sewers for a while until I found the exit, went back into town.. wandered... and exited.

Went back to reading the forums and here I am... I know that's far more than an hour, but oh well. I am probably going to read the forums to continue learning about the game, but not play it as much, as my computer cannot handle it. I may have to wait until I get a job and can afford to build myself a gaming rig to try to play this again.

Well, I was pretty interested in the game, a friend had showed it to me via a role play forum which I was quite active on. Made a dwarf, and began wandering about. I don't remember a whole lot, I got lost in the plaza... Watched as people went by not noticing me mutch at all. But then I came across a diaboli on the other side of hydlaa (Near the diaboli spawn point) I asked him for directions (keep in mind I was a role player before hand, and still role played through all of this, not once in ps had I been out of character without brackets. Kudos for me eh? ;)]

This kind diaboli asked if I was a 'n00b' which I replied, "Well if thats what a new commer is called then yes I am. (at this point I had not read the forums or the yliakum history so I didn't bother saying where I was from.) He showed me to the sewers, which I was more then pleased to find... Killed rats with my bare hands, and for some reason Saved up trias to buy a three rivet shield... (I figured i could use a bit of defense ;))

From here on out things got hairy... I died, and in the Death realm I was like a fish out of water! My computer was naturally dark, and I couldn't see the stairs that led out of the death guardian's chambers!..... I tried at it a little, took small steps (remember I was basicly blind)

I kept moving until I had unknowingly fell off a glitch point, yes, I was now on the very bottom of the DR! Although I did not know this, and fumbled around, somehow believing I was on the right path to the exit, every now and then I saw a pillar, and it had some light near it, I ran towards it swiftly, encountered a carkarass and killed it on the skin of my teeth, I also met some other lost souls, all were too busy to chat...

I gave up on planeshift for a loooong while, I was bored with it and went back to my RTS and TBS games... as well as my role playing forums.... but then my sister saw the game, and wanted to check it out, she was sooo interested she copied off the history of yliakum from the main site and read over it well, obviously this attratced my attention too! I really enjoyed the story of it all, and took an interest, I even picked PS up, at last though I decided to change characters, I delted my stonebreaker, and made an enkidukai.

This enkidukai could argueably be my first real character, I trainned him well, and even learned via a new friend I made how to lighten up my monitor! With my monitor lit up I could navigate the death realm with relative ease.

Today I have retired to a simple citizen of Hydlaa, a hard working Ylian. Though if it wernt for reading the history of Yliakum I might not have decided to pick up the game again. And as of now, I have no intentions of leaving planeshift!

(Yes, this is a bit more then my first hour, but it is my first steps in yliakum. :))

Set texture downsampling to 1/16 and see if it helps.

I wish they had logs back when I started...I would love for nostalgia sake to go back and see who I talked to first and what my first words were.  I remember that we all spawned in the same place by the statue and did so in mid air.  My first 15 minutes or so was just hanging there as I looked through help to learn the controls.  The lag was staggering.  Once I got the hang of that I went all around Hydlaa to learn the layout of the city.  It was all on a flat plane back then.  Exploring an unknown world was the best part.  I knew I just had to keep walking and sooner or later things would start to look familiar.

I met a Ynnwn who showed me crystals.  I wish I could remember his name, it was Japanese sounding and started with an M.  Then I met a fenki named Savarin who showed me how to climb to the rooftops.  I couldn't do it at all at first, I kept getting stuck under the ledge.  Boy did that change.  Ah the days of no fall damage and MB were quite special.  Later that day I met another fenki named Karyuu who had started a few weeks before I did.   :D

I learned about PS from an article in a Linux magazine and decided it looked interesting and worth trying out.  My first hour in game was pretty good actually, I did end up in the death realm but I followed people out slowly after wandering around for a bit, most seemed as lost as I was but I eventually made it out. I did learn it was better to follow the people who moved with purpose, though running through death realm is not the easiest thing.  :whistling:

Other than that, I met a lot of interesting characters who were very helpful to a new face in town.

I've been here just over a year now and I don't intent to leave any time soon, if ever.

My first hour was very nice, perhaps it helped that this was my first ever mmorpg. Anyway, I spawned in Ojaveda and walked around a bit, marvelling at the scenery and /tell'ing a friend of mine who had also joined. I couldn't understand why I couldn't find him untill I realised he was in another town. After a while another player, Nuthedie, came up to my and started talking to me, I quickly got the hang of RP and we had a pleasant chat. I was enjoying myself so much, but I didn't notice the Rogue coming up behind me.

Nuthedie shouted "Beware!" and next thing I knew I was in Death Realm. Nuthedie kindly /died and came after me. He told me he didn't want to show me the way out yet and that I must try and figure it out on my own. I wondered around Death Realm in awe, I was really very impressed with the way it was built, and the fact that I didn't know where to didn't bother me at all, because I was enjoying the scenery so much.

Eventually after much wondering about I spotted another player going the right way and when I saw where he went I thought to myself "Sneaky buggers!" and followed him. After a quick experience in the black nothing, I /died and went back the same way, after that it was smooth sailing to the end. When I got back to Ojaveda, Nuthedie had to go, so I decided to try and travel to the other town and find my friend. At that stage the Ojapath wasn't so long, but I was still nervous, seeing trepors and rogues. When I reached Hydlaa my jaw dropped, I was like "woooow". Anyway, not much more to tell. I found my friend, who eventually quit PS and never came back... I, on the other hand, persisted, and I'm still loving it.
