Spare a thought for the outsiders
« on: April 28, 2007, 08:24:31 am »
Wohoo! Finally, I'm in!  \\o//

I just wanted to say - as well as "Hellooo!" of course - that there should be (if there isn't already: couldn't find one..) a facility for those who for some reason can't access the forum, to post with their problem.

What am I going on about? Well, I've been trying to register with the forum for a few days now, and only just managed to get an email 'letting me in'. This was, after using different usernames, email addys, password recovery, etc.. (yes I'm sure that's not the kindest way of treating the boards, but I wanted in! :P Sorry  :-[). Just one small topic area somewhere in the 'forum/help' section would be nice. It was frustrating! hehe

Anyway, now I'm in, I just have to get the game working on Linux, then try and remember what to do (I played a little some time ago). So.... do what you like with this post! :D

I hope I can get into it this time. I couldn't quite get to grips with how to do stuff.. hehe!

^..^

Hello Lya,

Sorry to hear that the boards were giving you such trouble with registering... They're usually very good with avoiding such problems. However when they do arise, anyone may feel free to contact a moderator or a PS dev for help. You can see the names of the moderators under each board, and my email address is listed publicly in my profile :) We also have a guide explaining how to access our IRC chatroom, which you can turn to at any time for help with whatever issue. Our forums aren't the only means of communication, just often the most comfortable.

Glad to see that you have made it in one piece, and enjoy your stay!

For a quick access (if your browser can handle that): irc://chat.freenode.net#planeshift

Unfortunately, this board only supports "http" links - I would have enjoyed to make this link clickable, but it doesn't work.

Thank you both :)
'Comfortable' Karyuu...? yes, I think you hit the nail on the head there, with possibly a little impatience too  ;D

You know it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of simple board for people who can't register problems... one that allows anonymous posting, but makes you enter a captcha or whatever its called to prevent abuse by bots.  Not sure its a great idea bit I could see it being useful now and then.

We don't have enough of such problems arising to warrant a whole separate board, Induane. Plus as I mentioned there is always IRC - you can use it to contact a forum admin and try to get your forum problem sorted out.

There were a few board issues where there was a flood of spam ( normally from a particular domain ).  So as a result we had to block that domain for a while.  But as Kary said we are usually available to work though any of those issues.

I am not sure if the forums supports a board that allows different posting rights like anonymous.  It probably does but I don't think there is enough traffic to warrent another board.  One thing that might help is to have a dedicated email address for this though.  I can set up something like forum_support@hydlaa.com and give that to Kary ( or another moderator ) to manage.

I guess thats true.  If it helps, the planeshift site I run has a link on it called "Get Help" which launches an embedded irc client directly to #planeshift-build - might be enough to get people rolling.  It also supports more channels, so I can add or change different ones.
