RPing: what is good and what is bad?

Being an Explorer I travel constantly from Oja to the Bronze Doors region, and consequently I cross my path with others characters.
Sometimes they ask me some directions, and I would like to roleplay that like this:

Char1 say: Good day!
Eagel say: Good day traveler, what can I do for you?
Char1 say: Tell me, Where can I find the Ruined City?
Eagel looks into his pocket seraching for something...
Eagel's hand holds an strange device
Eagel looks at his device and says: Hmm... lets see... It should be... that way
Eagel points the large stalagmite behind the hills
Char1 say: Oh, thank you... may Talad be with you.
Eagel say: And you. Take care.
Char1 say: bye.

Now... I know there's no devices nor compass, and maps are experimentals right now...

It's good to roleplay something like that? Would I be wrong about the settings?

Frankly I can't see why they wouldn't have some sort of directional device, they have an observatory after all. Nothing wrong with this at all in my opinion.

Well as long as you keep it vague like that your device could be anything from a map, to a compass or even something that has nothing at all to do with determining directions So I don't think there is a danger of colliding with the settings at all.

a strange crystal of many points with dancing glitterings inside
like a polyhedron cage for glow-worms 

I'm trying to stablish how far can I rp without falling out the settings.

I can RP even my exit from the game making a shortcut for /quit

/say "Eagel closes his eyes and start to pray in old enkien."
/say "His hand start to glow with white light and soon his body is covered with the same glow."
/say "Eagel starts to vanish and dissapear in the breeze"

That would make a lot of people gasps for air like 
Although it may sound wierd, I think people are more used to then seeing other people just 'dissapear' then go out in a lighting show 
  But nothing wrong with it, really

I'd steer clear of that because it doesnt really fit in with the settings. Its usualy best just to say bye and walk away from who ever your talking to and once your out of sight hit /quit if you really have to roleplay it.

I second Feline Prince's statement here.  Just RP that 'you have some business to attend to', or are 'going to take a nap', or 'go for a walk'.  Then, duck into an alley between buildings or head over to the other side of a nearby hill and quit.  It doesn't have to be a spectacle.  As far as other characters are concerned, your character is still 'around somewhere', just not right in front of them right now.

As far as the original example concerning giving directions goes, vague is better.  But, since we do actually have maps, why not just '/me pulls out a map.'?  Futhermore, if your character has explored the area a couple times already, wouldn't he already know these things without the help of any mysterious devices or maps?

I regard as bad RP or not RP (however well written/acted) anything that was developed as a way to settle or continue some sort of OOC grievance or where the RP is being used to continue harassment and circumvent rules by claiming "it is all IC so it's OK"
