Something to work for?
« on: May 10, 2007, 12:23:12 am »
I have been playing Planeshift for 2,5 years now and as you all probably know from your own experience over time you look start looking at things differently. At the moment I am having a period that with things in RL happening and in PS itself that I am starting to wonder again why I play PS. The obvious answer that comes to mind is the absolutely great people I have met here and the fun I have had Roleplaying here, but in the end it's starting to feel a little empty as nothing in PS lasts beyond your own RP.

I am wondering if this is something I feel alone or if others have felt this and have perhaps found answers. What in PS is worth to work for? Should I start another alt and another story if I feell the current one has reached that point that you can't really go any further with PS in it's current stage?

No, you're not alone in that feeling. Most of the long term players (myself included) have at one time or another drifted away from the game to pursue RL for a while. Whether you drift back is up to you. I've made some good friends in-game, sounds like you have too. Have a break, come back in a little while, see how you feel about it then.

To answer "what is there to work for?" Wellll, we're getting to experience every stage of the development of a game. Whether it gets there or not doesn't really matter so long as you have fun along the way. The setting is good for RP, and there's always something you can do with your RP.

Starting new RP characters is always fun. Whenever the server gets back up and you've run around madly checking everything out, try a different race, and create a story.

Planeshift is a game, games are about fun, not work

I think the title says it all.

For me, in the moment any recreational or entertainment activity starts looking like a job, you should search for something else...

So I will answer a secondary question to your first one:

What in PS is worthly entertaining and fun?

It depends, I don't know why, but some people have fun killing a spawnable mob several thousands of times to max a certain skill, while others stand hours and hours pressing a shortcut to dig gold, and others keep swapping for hours and hours ores from a container(furnace) to other(stock casting) and vice-versa, while others like to press buttons, practice timing and pray for luck to have the random combat system dices help them on duels with very little of actual action and convincing animations(instead of going on a CTF/Deatmatch/etc on another genre of game that is infinitely more tailored and interesting for combat.). Nothing wrong with all of this, as long as you find it fun. Once you start seeing it as a job, you should immediatelly stop doing it(It's no wonder that there are people - farmers - who are hired to level characters in certain games... for most at least, levelling is like a job).  Now others like to use imagination to go beyond the limitations of an alpha game engine, but sometimes they go too far as well and become godmodders, having fun at the expense of others just like PKers or of realism(even though I don't believe realism should work to hinder gameplay, but on the contrary, to improve it and make it more fun).

No, you're right.  Planeshift is a social game and the reason to come back is the people you surround yourself with.  I've met a lot of great people in Planeshift and I love playing the game with them.  I've met a lot of horrible people as well who make the game hell at times but the good outweighs the bad.

It depends on what you're looking for. If it's becoming work to keep around, then it's probably not worth it. If you're hanging on to see some great player vs player stuff in the future then don't bother. Most of the people that hang around here for ages are here as much or more for the friends they've made as for the game itself. If you like quests and other PvE stuff then stick around because our settings guys have got some really great material in the pipeline. Who knows, maybe you'll make some friends while completing it all and be one of the people who are still here in the years to come :)

Quick Note about PvP

Is a business tycoon game on its multiplayer support PvP? Yes, of course.

Competition between players does not need to be violent.

It's not just a matter of the PvP aspect of the game being violent.  The problem is that it's a flawed, unrealistic system which idiots use to harass other players.  If I spend enough time in-game I'm guaranteed to see someone duel spam someone they don't like for some frivilous reason and for shouts of "OM G X IS A COWARD!!11" to follow should the invite be declined.  The stupidity is amazing at times.  Here's a bit of a conversation I intercepted:

"anybody who doesnt like me need only present themselves before me and issue a challenge"

This was from an OOC conversation.  What we're dealing with here is a culture which has developed out of the duel system and a juvenile and trashy concept of what respect is.

To be honest I'm a kind of half arsed tester person.  I used to play alot but  I stopped, other games, reality etc.

But I come back each update play around, get re aquianted with the world, keep on top of things and then slowly drift away again.
