fsck it and reinstall.
then run up and get the latest drivers for everything.

What exactly is 'screwing up'?
Confusion is always the most honest response

fsck, well... not what i had thought. but format the drive and reinstall everything.

for drivers the website of the manufacturer of <insert equipment here> will be the best place.

No need to wipe and install everything.  First off try this:

Open  Start ---> Run

In the run dialog enter:

Code: [Select]
cmd
After that, you will have a command line.  Enter:

Code: [Select]
chkdsk /f c:
It will tell you it cannot check the disk while windows is running (or something similar) and will offer to do a boot up scan instead - choose yes.

Reboot the machine.

Let it run through the disk check.  Next, download the following programs, update, and let them scan your PC for problems.

Adaware SE Personal

Spybot Search & Destroy

CCleaner

you can run your favorite scanners too - I really like the above free ones though.

Next click on Start ---> Run

Enter:

Code: [Select]
regedit
Browse to:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER ---> Software ---> Microsoft ---> Windows ----> Current Version ----> Run

Highlight all of the keys in the stuff on the right hand side and delete them (unless one is one you recognize as your anti virus software.)
Once they are all highlighted - delete them.  (Right Click ---> delete) or delete key.

Next scroll way back up and browse to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ---> Software ---> Microsoft ---> Windows ----> Current Version ----> Run

And do the same thing.
There will be a key called "default" you can't delete - don't worry about it.

Exit registry editor.

Reboot your machine again.

See if it is running any better.

If it is not... then do the following (provided you have a windows xp cd handy)

Stick in the XP cd - reboot the machine (don't go through the options that pop up when you stick it in while running windows)

It will ask if you want to install or repair - select install (don't worry we're not reinstalling, but the first repair option dumps you to recovery console - and its tough and worthless without lots of training)

Eventually you will get to the partition manager - it will list your hard drives to install to.  It also has the option of hitting "R" for repair here as well.  Do this.  This will refresh all your system DLL files.  You will see messages about deleting files - don't worry - its deleting the dlls its getting ready to replace, not your files.  It may ask for some driver disks along the way - if you have them good, put them in - otherwise hit cancel.  You can install your drivers later if need be. This will run and look like a regular windows install but it is not.  When it is complete all your installed programs will still be installed, all your settings will be intact, and all of your files will still be there.

Remember it is the 2nd option to repair, NOT the first. The first is confusing and unfriendly.  Use the 2nd repair option on the screen where it lists the hard drives in your computer.

This will really get your computer into good shape, and you don't need to lose everything to do it.

But as always there is some risk so backup anything 100000% critical to you.

I would have suggested trying the usb drive in a free port instead of in the wireless first before doing anything to the software. It might just be that the wireless card's usb hub is not compatible with the usbdrive. Also try disconnecting the wireless and web cam and see if the drive works as the only usb device.

You might be right about just that device bilbous, but errors after defrag with hardware profiles, and strange behavior suggests software problems are affecting his system.  Whether or not they affect the usb device is tricky, but it would be nice if he had a fairly clean slate to work from since computer cruft that builds up can cause difficult to diagnose problems.  Everything I described above minus the dll refresh repair option is reasonable maintenance anyways.

Also I wouldn't recommend defragging your disk all the time.  Maybe once every 3-6 months at most.  Its a lot of wear on your drive and it doesn't "fix" much of anything really, it just arranges stuff to load a bit faster.  Your computer shouldn't be changing SO much that it needs defragged constantly.

It may be a power problem with the usb, I belive usb can only suply 500mA.  Try it without the usb cam pluged in and vis versa without the netgear in. one option may be a powered usb hub.
I have an older laptop which doesnt have enough power to run more than 2 usb devises unless they are only small, I would take a guess that the netgear and cam take more power than others. windows xp sometimes gives a power surge message on the task bar.

Indeed, I kind of missed the defrag part of the post.

Unless you are a media junky ;)  I average about 240Gig's a month downloading, So lots of info being written and deleted. I defreg after 100Gig no matter what.

Gondric, you can always buy a USB hub. They have really dropped in price and are usually foolproof.

For some reason a lot of MB makers have put USB 1 and USB 2 ports on their MB, and it can and does cause people to have a lot of issues. On my system the front ports are USB1, and the back are 6 USB2 ports. I had lots of probs till I got service pack 2 and the latest drivers for my MB. I spent $20 on a 8 port USB hub with a power booster, and all my conection probs are gone.

They can be, but I was reffering to the multi USB port unit.

I have a multi card reader too, and I am so glad I did. It makes transfering data from cameras and MP3 players a breeze ;)
