Interesting. Up until now, I have viewed these "schools" as a (not at all fleshed out) part of the magic system: a philosophy behind the actual use of the glyphs and ways. This is especially so since they line up pretty OK with the ways (which have no inherent philosophy or value system), and in fact don't seem to offer anything that the ways don't. The increase in knowledge in these "schools" would then not alter the spells you can cast, but it would alter the effectiveness of the spells the ways give you, and possibly the mana drain, for different spells and also different uses of the spells. This seems most likely, especially since the settings has exactly zero mention of any sort of alternate "magic" system. The category "Martial arts" may or may not contradiict this. A Q&A question?
