system freeze...
« on: June 08, 2007, 04:03:33 pm »
hello, I'm having a minor situation here:

Every time I try to run the game, it freezes the entire system (only the mouse moves, but nothing responds, not even ctrl-alt-backspace). The strange thing is, I can't seem to find a set time when it takes place. I've already had it happen twice when I was looking at the very first screen (even before I get to see the log in screen), it has happened once while I was creating a new character and it has happened every time I try to connect to a world. It says something along the lines of 'loading world' on the left side.

Once I reboot my laptop, I get the following errorlog in my Planeshift folder:
Quote
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/terr_common/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/bronzedoorsworld/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/npcroom_corr/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/podium/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/bronzedoors/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/hydlaa_winch/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/npcroom2/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/npcroom1/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/magicshopworld/sound.xml
<src/client/psclientdr.cpp:237 HandleStatsUpdate> Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for 1410
<src/client/psclientdr.cpp:237 HandleStatsUpdate> Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for 1410

I'm running:
Debian, latest stable version
Intel core duo processor T2300 (1.66GHZ, 667 MHz FSB)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
2 gig ram
if any other information is needed, I'd be happy to help :D

((btw: after looking around on the forums, I've seen people post messages that they're also missing those sound.xml files, but their games don't crash, so I think the main reason my PS is freezing up is because of those last two lines, whatever they mean...))

edit: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=28897.0;prev_next=next this guy seems to be having almost the same error message as I'm having, but he's still capable of playing... (just thought I'd put this here, since it doesn't hurt to give too much info (unless you start pushing it and giving entire processor logs))

Sounds like a nasty bug.  Anything in the error logs in the ps directory?

well, unless you mean something completely different, I've already posted the content of the errorlog.txt I found in my planeshift directory (and please don't let it be a nasty bug, I really wanna play this game, looks like the best free mmorpg for linux around :D)

Somehow my thick skull missed that whole - "here is my errorlog" thing.

Did you compile from source or are you using the official binary?

at first I used the official binary downloaded from the torrent, but since that kept giving the same mistake, I downloaded it again, this time from one the site mirrors. I even checked the md5sum and it matched the sum it said on the site, so it "shouldn't" be a buggy binary...

edit: a little update... Since I reinstalled the game, I never seem to get past the initial screen at all... (I mean the very first screen, before you even log in, the one with the big tower and the four people)
also, and I don't know if this is a flaw, but there aren't any new error logs created when I cut/paste the existing error log out of the folder, is the error log supposed to update itself or simply create a new log?
edit 2: nvm the previous update, after yet another reinstall, I can get to the loading world screen again before it freezes
edit 3: yet another update; I installed my latest video card driver, but it still freezes at the loading world screen, however, the error log has changed:
Quote
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/npcroom1/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/podium/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/terr_common/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/bronzedoorsworld/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/hydlaa_winch/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/bronzedoors/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/npcroom_corr/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/npcroom2/sound.xml
<src/common/util/psxmlparser.cpp:282 ParseFile> Could not find file: /planeshift/world/magicshopworld/sound.xml
<src/client/psclientdr.cpp:237 HandleStatsUpdate> Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for 477
<src/client/psclientdr.cpp:237 HandleStatsUpdate> Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for 477
instead of the celcient not being ready for 1410, now it isn't ready for 477, dunno if that changes anything?
edit 4 (I'm just editing as I try new stuff out, hopefully this'll help getting a quicker solution): I disabled the sound, to see if that changes anything and sure enough (even though it still crashed at the same time as when I had sound enabled), the error log has changed:
Quote
<src/client/psclientdr.cpp:237 HandleStatsUpdate> Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for 1107
<src/client/psclientdr.cpp:237 HandleStatsUpdate> Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for 1107
Which means that this is probably what's causing the crash (I hope). Also, I don't know if it means anything, but it seems like the numbers my celclient isn't ready for are changing (first it was 1410, then 477 and now 1107)

You are using debian?

I'd suggest trying to compile from source if no one else has any idea how to fix your issue.  Its fairly easy, and with good instructions shouldn't take too long.  There is an official compile guide located at:

http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/planeshift/planeshift/docs/compiling.html

I also host some compiling guides though none quite specific for debian.  Most of my guides are for various versions of ubuntu, which is debian based.  My guides are a little more step by step but you'd have to change what you do for your system.  If you have trouble with the official guides, try mine located here:

okilidokily! (damn, I watch the simpsons too much ;) ) I'll try that in about an hour or so (have some things to take care of first) I'll post how it went!

edit
ok... looks like this is going t be tougher than I thought... Even the guides specifically for debian have some steps in them I can't do, are using packages I can't install or even download, I'll see if I can work around it
edit 2 So I discovered that compiling this thing is harder than just following a guide (eventhough it's an excellent, if I may say so) I'll continue this tomorrow, I'm off to bed
edit 3 ok, I compiled the entire thing using that official guide, but it's giving some errors. whenever I start the psclient, it shows for a fraction of a second and there is an entire list of errors and warnings in my terminal. (http://rafb.net/p/yHdgKj14.html) any suggestions on how to solve those? I've tested CS with the walktest and CS is running just fine

First thing (if You did not do that already): replace directiories "data" and "art" with those from binary version.
Other errors indicate, that You probably haven't  installed all needed  development libraries and headers: freetype2-devel, alsa-devel and libxxf86vm-devel (I'm not sure what are the names of them in Debian), so some CS plugins were not compiled and are missing.

Yea I caught him in planeshift-build the other night and mentioned something similar but wasn't able to stick around and be as helpful as I would have liked.

Try as root:

Quote
apt-get --assume-yes install libjpeg62-dev x11proto-gl-dev autoconf libcurl3-dev jam bison flex-old automake1.9 libcurl3-dev libmng-dev libmikmod2-dev libogg-dev libvorbis-dev zlib1g-dev libpng3-dev build-essential cvs libtool libglu1-mesa-dev xserver-xorg-dev libxt-dev libopenal0a libopenal-dev subversion zlibc libttf2 libfreetype6-dev libfreetype6 libasound2-dev alsa-oss libxxf86vm-dev libxext-dev x11proto-xext-dev

That works on ubuntu which is debian based so even if all of those aren't right it should install most of your needed deps.

Good luck!

ok, first off: the problem's solved... (the hard way, iow: taking a dvd with vista on it and installing that over debian :D)
secondly: induane, I had already tried to install several of those apps you want me to install: the libcurl3 for example wouldn't install, it required me to uninstall tzdata, which deals with dates and stuff and I wasn't eager to start fidgeting with that... bison, flex-old and automake1.8 were installed (the guide I was linked to from one of the previous posts said explicitly NOT to use any more recent version than automake1.8, something with compatibility if I recall correctly)

and now, on to solve the problems that this vista version is causing me! (hurray, hurray...  :o :@#\)

btw, thx for all the help you've given, I'm sure we would've gotten it to work very soon!
(another thought... after several months of debian, it took me a surprising 3 minutes of vista to get annoyed... ever since, it only started growing bigger and bigger (the annoyance))

I never cared for Debian myself except for server installs.  Ubuntu makes a great desktop whereas Debian just doesn't as well for me.  I guarantee you could have compiled it on Ubuntu no problem.  My instructions are well tested, even by people who have never compiled anything before :D

As for automake - those issues were fixed ages ago.

well, I did manage to compile it without problems... it's just that it even gave me problems after I had compiled it... either way, I'm having more issues now that I'm running vista and to be perfectly honest, I'm tempted to just throw my hands in the air and give up on PS, which I'd really find a shame, since it's the first mmorpg where there's actual rp'ing going on in game (as far as I've read on the forum, I've never managed to login...)

Install Ubuntu - its an awesome desktop.  It has the nice ease of use if you want it, the power users tools if you want it, up to date packages, and of course me writing compile guides which are flawless (auuugh my head can't fit through this doorway anymore! Damn Ego!).

You'll have PlaneShift up and running in no time - plus you'll be impressed with the slickness of Ubuntu.  I couldn't stand vista either, though I have it on a test machine here at work for testing purposes.  REALLY CAN'T STAND the  new start menu.

PlaneShift does run beautifully on many systems, and few have major issues.  I'd bet some of it at least is debians weirdness.  Its just not intended as a desktop distro I don't think.
