400.000 users
« on: June 17, 2007, 08:44:02 pm »
(news taken from main site)
Few days ago we reached 400.000 registered users! This result represents a big step forward in building a great player community and having PlaneShift as a well known game. We are still working very hard on release 019 and the bugs remaining are few and related to inventory functionalities. We hope to have this fixed pretty soon. All other parts of the game have been tested and are working properly.

Congratulations from all three of my users....

Plus the 99%-98% that have accounts but don't play Planeshift anymore.

Numbers aren't so great to measure the progress of a community. I prefer qualitative over quantitative. And regarding quality, roleplaying seems to be sadly degrading for a time. Of course as soon(TM) as truly groundbreaking features are released, perhaps many of these inactive accounts might become active again.

Keeping roleplay alive and kicking is up to us, not so much the Devs.

When I'm online, I do my part. However the problem is deeper, there are the people on the surroundings saying "LOL" and about how they just ranked another level in sword, and regardless of how I do an excellent and interesting roleplay, they will hardly change their behavior in-game, and I don't have authority to enforce it, as doubtfully they would focus on roleplay willingly, so the best I can do, when things are really bad, is to fill my ignore_list and in cases of really bad players(that usually are banned for other reasons), encourage my friends to do the same. Add to that the "uber-warriors that can kill anybody with 100% success rate in a single blow", or simply, godmodders, and you'll see what I am trying to explain. Of course more about this problem is to be discussed in the following thread:

Nope, I'm being quite optimistic to believe many will return once a truly groundbreaking feature will be released, and that a groundbreaking feature will be released. ;)

Anyway, these numbers matter little. Specially if more than 50% of these 400,000 accounts are of 1337s and not roleplayers. And there is no dough involved, so in the end, it's just community's P.R. stuff, nothing more.

Come on, you're missing the point, the numbers are good for publicity terms and even if I agree not all publicity is good (the one that attracts the so much loved 1337s, for example, is bad), it can still be good by bringing more good roleplayers and who knows, even more devs that'll boost the development up.

It's okay that soon will be "soon(tm)", I personally want a stable release instead of one that makes me lose things I rather not to or crash every fifteen minutes. We all want the new version, but let it come out at the right time. Anyway, good job, devs, keep it up.

Why worry about publicity? Won't Planeshift be free forever? And anyway, there are much better methods for doing publicity than just numbers, and these methods involve doing things that will definitively give a boost on the growth of the same numbers. ;)

I don't get the question, wasn't it answered in "it can attract good roleplayers and devs"? The game is free indeed but it doesn't run on air - it runs on volunteer work. So, I'll show you my chain of thought: Publicity = more devs  = more development = more "things that will definitively give a boost on the growth of the same numbers".

Anyhow, in a few weeks or so it'll reach the 500.000 mark, which is more important, and we're finally getting into Summer, let's all hope our devs have little things to do this Summer other then making us happy and feeling lucky :D
