XML contest idea
« on: July 01, 2007, 02:04:43 am »
We have the art contest about small quest items made by the community, which will go in game if good enough. What about XMLS?

Don't you hate when you see something what could be improved, but it just isn't over releases, even though you feel you are the one wh could do it? Why not change it? I think that if Devs have no time to mke it better, maybe people from the community could? Its code afterall, if i understand license right, its open.

So question to our team, Karyuu who was so nice to organize such initiatives: would it be possible to organize best XML contest?
Anyone could post an xml they edited of some in-game window and the best, if good enough would be picked and go in game, without all the bugging around devs if they have time and if its ok.
- One entry for one window
- It would have to be clearly specified what in what line was edited (possibly by changing the font color)
- Possible new graphics/edits if really needed, but for all 3 skins, not less. Sometimes it also necessary to change imagelist.xml inside each skin.
- The XML edit would have to be compatible with all 3 skins.

I know that a dev is maybe working on the gui and how it would look better, AryHann I suppose :) But what if the community could help out with it? Maybe there is some huge plan for general improvement, but why not the above fixes in the meanwhile?

Hey, if you guys can whip out improvements, by all means :) This sounds great. I'm not too familiar with the backbone structure of the GUI and how it's put together, so maybe Arianna will be better able to provide comments and guides. But I do like this initial idea.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I don't know how others, but i can do a lot http://crimsonorder.freepgs.com/things/ps-mc/, but
I wan't to se what others can do
Bugging around proper devs for it is not worth the time... This should wait in a topic like this, where everyone can see it and in the end if noone will make better any dev with time can try commiting it.

If you want to improve something that´s annoying you, just do it!
For example, the ´promote´ dialog of the guild window is quite screwed up. On my pc I can´t promote someone to the level below guildleader, because I can´t click on that level! So I just fixed the code, sent in the patch to Acraig and he comitted it.

Yes thats the way to go, normally, great that you did it.
But I don't know if i'm thinking right, but wouldn't i see there http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/planeshift/planeshift/data/gui/ updates to shortcutwindow and all config windows by acraig if i sed him some patches quite a while ago? Am i right? wrong?
If i'm right, this means there is a problem, time ptoblem? hence the contest idea, so the time needed for devs would hopefully decrease.

I´m on vacation. You´re lucky that it´s bad weather now and my friends went to the internet cafe. If you want Acraig to accept patches, you´ll need to go through some trouble. When I changed part of the GUI I sent him a package that contained before and after images, I sent the code that I changed and why I changed it. I also talked to him on IRC, it´s better to talk to him directly than to send him an email.

Good luck.
