How does other players respond to your character?
« on: July 13, 2007, 12:22:19 pm »
I have discovered something I find very interesting, and would like to know if anybody got any similar experience.
My main character is the "boring simple male human char". I like this character, because it's the easiest for me to identify with.
Some times when i come to new places people great me, some times they don't. If I ask someone I don't know a question, some times they answer politely. And some times they treat me with suspicion. "..what does he want, is he going to hurt me.. ".

I had couple of problems with some missions, that got corrupted, so I had to create a new character to get the battle helm among other things.
I decided to use the most attractive character for this, and created a new profile with one of these hot looking female characters. ;)
- That was an eye opener.
Suddenly everybody greets me, and are very polite.  ..if I ask for help, I get allot of help.
- I think some stereotype men has a mental understanding that Female+Computer=Needs help! :D

This also made me think of my handling of other female characters. Do I as a male character tend to treat them differently? ..like they are less dangerous, and more friendly, maybe even more in need?

I recommend for everybody to play the game for at least one day with a completely different char. Just to experience what I'm trying to say. ;)

I actually find that quite funny.  Happens IRL too i bet.  Face it, when a hot chick needs help just about every guy in the area will come sprinting over and help her.
There are two types of people in this world: The Pinky and the Brain.
Which one are you?

Hello!

Well, it is like in the real world. There is nothing better than being female in a world full of chivalry. :-*

With kind regards

hmm funnily enough I rp many characters and my male dwarf character is better recieved than any of my female characters of any species. I think it's down to the character you play more than anything. if you put little effort into your roleplay, you'll become so 2 dimensional that the only way people will judge you IS by your character model, i mean, what else is there if someone is just going around speaking in a very plain way like a regular person in the street in modern day times? It seems to me too many people expect to be greeted with open arms by playing dull unimaginative characters, personally my main character would talk to you briefly then laugh, then go and get drunk if you werent someone interesting enough to keep his attention. That's just how my character would act.

Getting extra service and attention for being female.. Yes, it's a RL thing.

The dwarfs is cool. I believe everybody like it. Unfortunately there's not to many female dwarfs running around.

But what characters do you have, and how does others react to them?

Make a feminist female character, mirrored on many of the feminist movement leaders like for example Gloria Steinem. And one who will become pissed if a man becomes too overprotective of her. There are several other choices to reduce or fight against this phenomena, but unique characters always do it.

I have to admit when playing with a female character people are a lot nicer to me. However that could just be because most people hate my character IC anyways  ;D Seriously thought I never understood it. I even tried being an evil female character. Sadly no one really took her seriously so I gave up  :sweatdrop:
Saggi Lezeheso, The Whisper's Jest
Demoik and Rioqura, The Immortal Harrow
Vertum, Will of Dakkru

Duraza Darkom, Slayer of Kittens

i played as a female enki most of the time, but in boredom i played a little as a male enki a few times.

no one talked to me
i mightve been talked to more as a female version but it wasnt extremely noticeable.

i think in general that players typically respond to the female version with more warmth well, because, thats jsut the way it is. Females are usually more approachable than males, and tend to talk more too...
Besides in my mind, females are more reticient when it comes to talking to males first then males are about talking to females...so that might be one of the reasons the female character is approached and helped out more. that and the girls jsut look pretty

but i cant really say for sure. the only times my character was really talked to as a female were when i was being introduced or when some noob would go around hitting on people and i jsut happened to be in the area.
people still managed to ignore me ;)

Out of all of my characters, the one that got the most attention, and had the most offers of help or items was the cantankerous old dwarf, Krook. He was rude, insulting, hateful most of the time, and spit on anyone who got too close.

A close second is Aeshion, my mute Diabolia (age 28). There always seemed to be someone who thought she may need help.

Then Hyuken, my Menki, and simpleminded barkeep. He is always greeted with smiles and asked if he needs anything.

Of course, those are my ‘friendly’ characters. The ones of a more devious nature get a completely different reaction.
