this would be convenient
« on: March 13, 2003, 08:18:24 am »
I think an in-game email checking program would be sweet.  For instance, an small icon in the corner of your text box that may flash when you recieve a new email, then with a command like \'/mail\' ,you could check your email from within game.

just a suggestion...

I don\'t think that would be the best of ideas since PS will aim to be as realistic as possible.
How do the characters receive their mail? Through a chip in their heads? Not likely.
Maybe when you have your own house you can have a mailbox at your house. That would be more realistic and would fit more in the fantasy setting that is being created.

misunderstanding?
« Reply #3 on: March 13, 2003, 10:11:35 pm »
I think you are misunderstanding what i mean. I meant the USER\'s email.  ie.  \"user@hotmail.com\" or whatever your email address \'outside\' of game may be.  This way, you would still be able to check your email without having to log out of Planeshift.

Wow, and I thought I had an email problem...
you could use Alt-Tab like the rest of the world

Most things in life operate, not on reality, but the perception of reality.

Yeah, if you are expecting something that important to come in your email, just use alt+tab. It shouldn\'t be added to a game just because you \'might\' someday need to check your email in game.

I like the mailbox idea, but isnt the Planeshift world in somewhat medievil times? correct me if Im wrong but i dont recall mailboxes during those periods. Now bulliten boards! That\'s something that would be interesting! Example, somewhere in town there is this large wooden board, and people can post messages on this board and only people the message was intended for can read their letter. Just an idea.

Well sounds good except the \'only intended for\' thing. If you want it to be realistic anyone would be able to read pieces of page on the wall.  :P

I like the idea of a in game mail system it may not be exactly medieval but neither is people walking around asking when the next patch for theagme is out or walking around calling every man and his dog gay if you know what i mean

as well Alt + Tab ing out on PS wouldn\'t be the brightest of ideas seeing how much ram it uses up

well i don\'t recall beings like a Kran or Diaboli in any of my history books either.
We can stretch the real reality a bit cause it\'s fantasy.

just like kyp14 said i guess.

well, what i wonder about is why should i trust an oversized emailclient if there is one one my desktop knowing my pgp keys already...
no way if u need to check for email i suggest u press alttab and launch your client, but and ingame client is not a good idea because of what if u downloaded yar mail and the one from yar business partner u r just able to view in the game and that damn server is down right now?
but blackmailing would b a good idea. so u r able to leave a message for one of yours buddies and these get it when coming online like the normal whispered texts just delay because of the login time... but i think this is also a mater of storage on the server so for characters offline i would limit the amount of stored messages to 20 or stuff and each of them has a limit of 160 chars or something like that. more like an ingame PM system.

and hey, just because it is an RPG that does not mean we will have to dice right? it is an digital media. and i would like to have a good game. and no limitations of it\'s possibilities just because of \"huh err is that realistic\" the whole game is fantasy so i suggest u better write a story to make it realistic fitting into the game world like \"all beings in this world knew telepathy...\"

don\'t argue with fools, first they pull u down to their level, then they beat u with experience.

I agree with Shaded. As long as it isn\'t ridiculous, why the hell not?  :]

I think you should go ahead and program in a backscratcher too. You know, in case I get an itch. You guys aren\'t busy, are you?
