DVD Burner dummy here
« on: July 14, 2007, 06:31:08 pm »
Ok. So, here's the thing. I want to get a dvd burner, so that I can eventually burn myself some movies and what not. What are programs I need and what do I need to know? Is there a better type of burner? Are there better types of dvds I should buy?

Here's what I got. A bittorrent program. Now, do I need a program to convert movies into dvd format? Things like that. If anyone knows any of this stuff, please assist this DVD burner dummy hehe. ;D

I've always went with Plextor model burners.  And another company that has never failed me is the lite-on models.  Its what I use when ever I'm asked to build computers for people.

Plextor burners comes with the Roxio burning suite.  It's all I've ever used.  If fr some reason Roxio doesn't do its thing, my backup software I use, is called CloneCD or Clone DVD, depending on what type disc I'm burning.

As for getting the right kind of blank media, at least with the plextor drives, they ive you a list of recommended and tested to work well types of blank media by many different companies so that you know if you buy that type of disc it will work well.

As for companies that make high quality blank media, Taiyo Yuden would be the best bet, but their bank media is a bit more pricey than the norm.  Get what yeah pay for.

As for where I do shopping at:

http://www.thetechgeek.com/index.htm For blank media
http://www.newegg.com/  For the burner itself.

Greetings,

Well i tend to go for LG burners myself, they have never failed me so far... and to the software i use K3B (Linux) or Nero (if i ever have to use windows - but that doesn't happen to often ). Now the media i use... hmm.. mainly 'silver circle' or 'silver blue' for cds .. and for dvds... well, i only use rewriteable dvds so that may not be what you are looking for since they cost more than 'normal' dvds.

I hope that helps you a bit,

Take care and have fun

Not that I (Officially) support downloading movies and burnnig them you actually have 2 options here.  The first as you have asked is software based,  I use (for home movies of course) VSO convertX to dvd,  the later versions of Nero have good conversion plugins so I have been told as well.  I would however consider you orther option as well,  there are now numerous and often they are the cheapest (due to the nature of making one to cover all bases ideals) players that read AVI format.  AVI being the most common you will find when obtaining these movies. With these machines you can burn 4 or 5 movies to one DVD and watch them from the players own menu system.
