Roleplaying Information from the Forums ICly
« on: August 02, 2007, 01:49:48 pm »

I hope this wasn't asked before but I haven't found so ...

I wonder how to roleplay things you read on the forums in an ICly way ... for example if you have read someones story here ... How would you tell this to somebody in Game ?

Awaiting your suggestions ...

Thanks

Suvok

I've always assumed that the stories in the role playing section are books in a library of some sorts. Normally, if I make reference to the stories, I say that I found it in 'the library'. This opens it up a bit, means that it is not necessarily Jayose's.

Hello!

Well, this is not easy to answer. It depends on the story or information. Consider where your character could have read the story or how he got the information. If in doubt, that your character was able to get it in the game, treat it as OOC knowledge. Most writings in the forum are OOC even though dealing with characters. Some information could be spread as rumors which may be true or not.

With kind regards

I agree that it's not easy to answer. It depends on the situation, ie: whether my character knows the individuals involved, has a history with the guild/group, has completed a quest that would give her access to the information, etc. Some things can be overheard, say in a pub or other public area.. and sometimes the things overheard can be interpreted incorrectly, as in overhearing only a small part of a conversation.  I remember the game I played as a child where we had to whisper something to the person standing beside us, and they whispered it to the next person. The whisper would go all the way around the circle until it got back to the person who originated the whisper-- and it was invariably inaccurate by the time it made full circle.

Although some stories posted to the forums would obviously become part of the libraries permant colelction, I kind of assume that most stories don't.

There are three kinds of people in this world.
Those who understand numbers and those who don't.

Personally I ignore all forum stories and content ... you can say I play it safe and only assume my characters know about things that happened around them in-game.

I use the same system as Zan, I ignore forum posts in-game.  Forum threads can get too far from any in-game reference points to be workable.

What would be nice is to have in game "bulletin boards" where citizens can post messages, guild recruitments, classifieds etc.

Yay, thanks for your answers.

Helped me to take the decision of whether or not using it ICly ... but some people really do hard work to post their history and information 'bout their ancestors in the forum and I think its kind of sad not to use this information.

But in the end, you are right ... it's probably OOC-Knowledge.

This discussion brought me to another (nearly similar) point ...

What about the ingame description of the chars ?

Would be also OOC, when I follow this thread ... you agree ?

People should not be putting their histories in their character description. That is what the Storywriting forum is for.

In game description of characters are supposed to be what your character sees of that character you are reading the description of, so those should most certainly be IC, exceptions being if they have a OOC disclaimer part to help the players reading the description out.  As example, a nice player might put a little ooc thing at the bottom of their description to let other players know that they are generally nice, but the character they play may be not so nice, and they don't want other players taking it personally when the not so nice character they play does some not so nice things to other players' characters.

Well, I have to admit that I have my problems with written histories of characters. Are these really written somewhere (diary, chronicles, etc.) ? I would say rarely. So they are "just" for entertainment and can't be used in game. An exception would be if the character has told his story to you so that you can take the written story as a reference. But as many characters try to hide some part of their history...

Ah right I forgot about the Hydlaa and Ojaveda message boards. Those I consider temporary solutions to the lack of in-game "bulletin boards" and what's on there is about the only thing my characters do get to read.
