Beckham is good at crossing and free kicks, and that's it. I think many people expect him to dribble the ball down the middle past 5 players and slot it in the bottom left though

There are many midfield players who are much better than him (See Christiano Ronaldo if you want tricks, or Frank Lampard if you want a more similar position and style of play). He's a household brand thanks to his wife however, and that's what makes him attractive to the American public.
As for the pay, well the clubs get a huge amount of money from TV, merchandise and tickets. It's only logical that a price war will occur for players between clubs, thus greatly inflating their wages.
