realism

first off this isnt a complaint or a rant. just something i was thinking of at work today.

With the exception of the characters, such as player characters, mobs, and pets. why is everything so realistic? we have one crystal as in the sun. we have oxygen. we have grass and dirt and trees that drop apples.

when we mine we mine for gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, emeralds, and rubys.

the streets are made of stone as are the buildings. we use chain, and leather armors. with metal weapons. we drink ale and cider and liquor. there are lakes and streams and caves. theres a sewer system filled with rats.

everything seems to be based on the real world except for the characters, and the fact that we are levels underground. why is nothing else its own.. world. its as if it was the midevil times and we were teleported to earth from other planets.

any idea why the settings are like this?
There is no right or wrong.... only Trias.

Because that's the way Luca chose it. This is a medieval fantasy, not a scifi fantasy or a prehistoric fantasy or an entirely otherworldly fantasy. The earthly elements are there to give players some sense of familiarity.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

It's very hard to come up with a whole world, borrowing things from real life only makes it a little easier.

There could be a thousand different explanations but, I think this is the gist of it.

Settings has been, for the longest time, a very inactive department (Don't kill me Talad or Darkmoon).  Xillix has taken over lately and a lot has changed.  Dermorian Longbeard and Angry Groffel are two examples of this, drinks native to the PlaneShift world (Ask Brado about drinks).  It's a simple matter of the settings team not having time before, I'm sure it will start changing now :)
