EXTREME lag in menu.
« on: September 02, 2007, 06:25:09 am »
Hey,

I am getting REALLY bad lag in the menu. Anyone have any ideas why?

Specs:

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty
Mobile AMD Semperon 3000+ 1.8ghz
512MB of ram
ATI RADEON Xpress 200M

--

Now... I'm not sure if the game would run or not... But it to be lagging in the menu o.O? Don't think that could be right >.>

I can run other games, such as open arena, armagetron, and alien arena fine. Thanks for any help.

I do not know about anyone else but I am a little confused as to what you mean by the menu. Are you referring to the login screen, the character selection screen, the character creation screen or something else?

Well, just a thought: you have a 1.8 GHZ processor (mine's a 3.2 GHZ and still has a small lag, I can imagine your lag.) You have 512 MB ram (I understand that it's a laptop, but still, a lot of recent things have started mandating 1GB or more) You have an ATI RADEON Xpress 200M which is not a bad graphics card, but I looked it up, and there have been many people having framerate and resolution problems, and reporting slow speeds. And lastly, your choice of linux. Seems Ubuntu's popular, yet so many people have had issues with it  :P. Anyways, Ubuntu never ran my Planeshift as well as others did, even on Gentoo and Red Hat it ran better. I would say that whatever part of this "menu" is lagging is because of everything you posted. That may sound a little vague, but there's nothing more to say. I would try it on Windows, if it runs fine there, try it on a different Linux distro. If it doesn't lag there, you know it's Ubuntu that's the problem, if it still lags, try upgrading. even an additional 256MB ram stick will help. One thing that helps alot is the mhz of your ram, obviously there's a big difference between a 32mhz stick and a 600mhz, and is it DDR1, 2, or 3 (highly doubt you got a new DDR 3 in there though :P)? Shouldn't be too expensive of an upgrade, 50$ - 100$ should do it. Hope this helps.

By menu I mean the login screen, character creation screen, and pretty much everything else... lol.

Never actually gotten into the game cause the menu is so slow and don't really have the patients(sp?).   ;)

My ram is 333mhz.

And... I don't really wanna install windows and try it but I suppose I will tomorrow cause of lack of nothing better to do. lol.

Although you said you can play other games, I need to ask if you have direct rendering enabled, because I had the same lag problem once, when I didn't have direct rendering enabled. To check, open a terminal and type: glxinfo.

It's not enabled. Any idea on how to enable it?

I'd try the ati binary blob driver.  In feisty to enable it do the following:

Click on the System Menu near the top of your screen, and go to "Administration".  Inside of that menu is an option for "Restricted Driver Manager".  Open that dialog.  If you have an ATI card as you said, there should be an option to checkbox and enable the driver.  Do so, ignoring warnings about unsupported software.  It may prompt you to restart your computer after it automatically downloads and configures the driver for you.  Do so.

After that, check again that direct rendering is enabled.  If it is not then we need to look into whats going on.

Keep us posted!

OMG...

I feel like such an idiot. lol.  ::)

I forgot I updated my kernal shortly before I installed this game and every time I do that it disables my video card driver. Just re enabled it and everything works fine now.  :woot:

Thanks for the replies!
