BitTorrent confusing
« on: September 09, 2007, 12:56:48 pm »
PART 1: A REQUEST: Could either the PlaneShift crew or a member please give step-by-step instructions for the entire process of installing the BitTorrent program, getting the PlaneShift torrent, and downloading & installing the program? Please include definitions for terms that people may be unfamiliar with or that may have ambiguous meaning (installer, client, torrent, tracker etc.).

I'm a veteran pc user but I'm doing something wrong and without comprehensive instructions, it's impossible to troubleshoot. Even the main download page is a little confusing with the BitTorrent and direct download links all jumbled together with no clear formatting where one section ends and the next begins.

PART 2: DETAILS OF MY PROBLEM: I installed the BitTorrent prgram. I then downloaded PlaneShift_CBV0.3.019.exe torrent from the download page (a 40k file). I clicked on that file, which opened the BitTorrent program. The filename appears in the main window but the progress bar is entirely red and all Statistics are zero except for Torrents & Remaining Torrents, which are both 1. The status bar at the bottom of the window says "Checking for firewall..." but seems to be stuck there. I've added PlaneShift to my firewall and given it liberal permissions.

So what's next? How do I start the download of that 251 mb file? How do I solve the firewall issue? (These questions are probably rhetorical if somebody can give a clear reply to Part 1.)

as for what is happening with the bittorrent client you are better off checking with the folk who built it.

NEKO: The link you give appears to be for the direct dwnload. I can not download a 251 mb file direct because my connection will never stay up long enough. I must use a process that can be paused, which is why I requested instructions for the BitTorrent process, not the direct download.

STEUBEN: Checking with the BitTorrent site was the first thing I did but their only instructions are for downloading programs from their own site. Since PlaneShift is not offered on BitTorrent's site, those instructions are useless. And since PlaneShift is offering BitTorrent as the only reasonable option for such a large download, is it too much to ask them to include basic instructions relative to their own site?

the problem lies with the bittorrent software not with planeshift. so to troubleshoot issues with <insert bittorrent software here> unfortunately yes it is too much to ask. the website for the torrent software you are using will have the help for the problem you are experiencing with it.

Use firefox.  it can resume direct downloads.

Hello,

I know what Premvital means with his connection, firefox doesnt permit to recover a download once the computer went down am i right? so it would be better to use a program like Flashget

Link download for Flashget : http://down6.flashget.com/fgf173.exe
Simple to use : launch the program => start the download http://88.198.39.231/planeshift/PlaneShift_CBV0.3.019.exe
=> Flashget program asks you where you want to save the file => save => downloading

if you have to stop the download be sure to exit your computer correctly, sometimes the download can be corrupted if you pressed the button "reset" or else. Welcome to planeshift ! :)

Durwyn: Thank you. This solution appears to be working well. I have downloaded 10Mb so far and can pause/restart the process. I'm even downloading the torrent file that the BitTorrent program had a problem with. Hopefully I will be in the game soon. Thanks again.
