Someday I'm going to make an MMORPG based around GTA-style gameplay. I already have a lot of the concepts sketched-out, including player-generated quests (usually in the form of a hitman/theif contract, where players and player-run shops are actively targeted by other players); two side: cops and 'robbers', each with their own specialisations and skills (cops focussing on weapon-skills, and robbers focussing on crime skills, with the skills being 'carjacking', 'lockpicking', 'Long range rifle', etc.); three city types - civil (no player-targeted crime, rare), gangland (rival gangs can attack each other, but no random attacks) and chaotic (anything goes); Player-run establishments like gun shops, hotels, drug barns, etc.; a prostitution system (no GTA rip-off would be complete without prostitutes :P), which could result in you having a baby or contracting a disease, but has positive effects; No 'monsters' - the enemies are simple citizens going about their business - criminals can mug/kill them, cops can frisk/arrest them, etc.

I haven't decided if it will be contemporary or sci-fi, but either way I'm gonna be a millionaire :P

I think that would be too chaotic. Like Garry's Mod 10 RP servers. Once the gun shop gets robbed, everyone has a gun and there is a HUGE war between the Civil Protection and the "Gangstas" mass chaos, then the server has to be restarted because peace is never returned.

PS's RP
WoW's Game mechanics and environmental shtuff
T4C's storyline
Runescape's economy (Believe it or not, RS has a well-balanced economy)
SWG's vehicles, and expansiveness
Guild Wars's Graphics and PvP

THAT is the ultimant MMO :)

No I have an even better one(Though more complicated), a MMORPSG(Massively Multiplayer Roleplaying and Strategy Game) that includes the previous ones and also:

- A very mature and roleplay oriented community.

- Yearly cyclic age shifts based on RW years and each year every character is wiped for the sake of realism(1st year is Medieval, 2nd is Renassaince, 3rd is Imperial, 4th is Industrial, 5th is Modern, 6th a cataclysm happens and puts the world back in Medieval -- cause futuristic stuff is excessively explored by other games --, and so on). Something like a MMORPG version of Civilization series.

- Each year is also a contest for those interested in Empire Building, "Imperial Wars" will be epic in Medieval Ages, and very large scaled during modern ages, like WW1 and WW2. Also there will be less violent and more discrete ways of conquering lands. Manage an economy while you roleplay your character dealing with diplomacy, etc.

- The winner of the previous year will hold a legacy for the new development age, but still it will be small enough to allow others to overcome it, and according to the type of empire victorious, other things like civil unrest will exist to make the competition fair.

- Governments stability are fully based on the competence of the players who manage them, revolutions(specially on the Imperial and Industrial ages) will cause constant shifts of culture and social values that will erupt into massive civil wars as the fallen governments attempt to counter it.

If such thing existed it would be the game of the century!

You mean like a consistent Civilisation game-world? Or would there be a single character you run around with?

Not really. See, in 'Civil' and 'Gangland' cities PvP is limited to missions and other pre-arranged fights (like gang wars, bank robberies, professional hits), which means random and chaotic acts of violence are only available in chaotic cities. Newbies spawn in Civil cities, and you can choose which city's hospital to respawn in at character creation - or if you pay a patient record transferral fee - which means you can respawn in a civil city whenever you die, to avoid a cycle of death.

Unless you piss off the wrong people and are constantly having bounties put out for you :P

Well, I just went in-game for the last time here and gave away all my of my many hundreds of thousands of trias to whoever wanted them.  I've taken down my website, guildlisting.com.  So long everybody!  Maybe I'll come by and check out Planeshift again in a year or so to see how it's doing.  If you want to find me, I'll be in Second Life.

www.cyberconnects.com

For any .hack fan, it's like a 2D simulation of "The World." It's a pretty cheesy game, but some of the people are really nice, and it can be addicting. =P

May I be so bold as to ask why?

Update:

Lord of the Rings Online > Minions of Mirth.

I plunked 50 buck-a-zoids on Lotro.  Something I don't normally do.
