  The Mercenaries

The wise dwarf sighed, put down his tools, and picked up his axes. He was getting paid to kill Ulbernauts again. The beasts bred, and grew, so fast for their girth that their population need trimming every other day. Not that he minded the monsters' breeding habits; it was good money. He was getting paid by a large mining group that trusted him. They paid him decently, although he knew that he wasn't getting the exact percentage of the group's earnings they had promised. He walked to the rock alone, and once there, met his friends, other mercenaries paid to take down Ulbers. They formed a group again and worked together in the mindless task of whacking Ulbers senseless. During the short times when no Ulbers were running towards the un-armored miners stealing gold as fast as their picks could move, they discussed things of interest to them. Today the topic shifted to money.

Since they all worked for different groups and guilds, it was obvious there would be pay differences. But one person was making 1,000 trias an hour, and another was making 10,000. The mercenaries were just individuals, and as a group, too unorganized to fix this problem, however. The dwarf wondered what would happen if they got together like the miners, and demanded a set pay. He voiced his opinions, and the others agreed.

At first, 'The Mercenaries' was simply a name for a loose group of two warriors, two mages, and one crafter: the dwarf. Although small, they worked together to bring down monsters, and the dwarf supplied them with sharp weapons. However, the community was too small. But who was there to recruit? The dwarf was kind-hearted, remembering the chaos of first being out on his own, and decided to help new adventurers, an ignored, and unskilled, force. Slowly, young people out to explore the world, nicknamed 'noobs,' were recruited and trained carefully until they were strong warriors and wizards that could aid the group, and make it profitable. One day, so many people crowded the ranks that it finally became more than a dream, and was a guild...

About us

We are a mercenary guild with a chaotic neutral alignment. That means we are an independent organisation that works for money and are bound by contracts. You may join us and receive benefits for working for us.
The guild is not a brotherhood of blood and consists not only of warriors and warlocks, we also have merchants, crafters and diplomats, which provide services for our customers when required.
Hence it is not surprising that we provide a lot of services in logistics and manpower to everyone who pays us well.

[OOC - We want to have fun together. We care about new players and will assist any new players in adjusting to life in PlaneShift.

What we want most is Role Playing in and out of the guild. Because of our IC (In character) mercenary tasks, we strive for deep interaction to other players and not to exist as an isolated guild.]

Guild hierarchy

Entry Level (Probationary) Ranks

Level 1 - Merc Recruit: This rank is for our newest and most inexperienced members who are still learning how to live in this realm. They do not possess any skills that would benefit the guild at this time.

Level 2 - Merc Man-at-Arms: This rank is for newer members who have gained some knowledge in a chosen area but do not yet possess enough skill to to be effective contractors to our clients.

Main (Deployable) Ranks

Level 3 - Merc Regular: This rank contains members who are sufficiently experienced in their field to perform contracts for our customers and make up the bulk of our membership.

Level 4 - Merc Veteran: This rank contains highly experienced members who excel in their chosen field. These members may be chosen to lead Merc Regulars in a contract. They will also be given preference to more high profile contracts.

Level 5 - Merc Elite: These members have proven themselves to be a valuable asset to the guild, effectively gaining an 'elite' status in their field and are given special leadership responsibilities in regards to contracts, and recruit training. These members will be first choice for the most difficult of contracts.

Management Positions
In addition to the ranks mentioned, there are management positions who have specific duties in relation to guild management.

Public Relations advisor: Members holding this position are responsible for internal guild events organisation, training excercises [and Role play scripting].

Merc Deployment Officer: Members holding this position are responsible for assigning resources for a customer's contract. Whether it be manpower or swords.

Merc Commanders: Members holding this position are responsible for the day to day running of the guild, addressing any issues that may arise and looking for new ways to improve the guild.

Public Relations Officer: This position is presently held by our Guild leader. As such, he as the veto right over any decision made by any other position/rank. However, the primary duty of this position involves establishing and maintaining relations with other Guilds, the press, and other factors which affect how people view our guild.

Rank progression and Management Position Assignment

Note the differentiation between Rank and Position/Role. This is by design, as holders of management roles do not participate in contracts unless necessary, and that a management role is a trustee position and may be revoked at any time. A management position is *NOT* a rank, but a responsibility.

Members of any of the Merc Ranks may be promoted up to Merc Elite based upon their skills in their chosen field and various other factors.

Guild members may be entrusted with any of the management positions based upon their knowledge of the realm, history, geography, and their input into guild matters.

Promotions, and management position assignments are at the discretion of the Merc Commanders and Public Relations Officer. An interview process may be followed if multiple people are eligible for a certain management roll.

Our services for you:

- Supply of material and knowledge.
- Making our manpower available for you and your aims.
- Slander, cutting off the tongue or even the head of your enemies.
- Supply of middlemen for political and economic issues.
- Escorting caravans, guarding borders and exploration guides.
- Protecting miners at the mines

In fact, our basic principle is to work for the customer who pays us most as quickly and discreetly as possible. If we decide to support anybody we will be loyal to them. We will not deviate from our arrangement, no matter what bid a competitor may present. However, should the employer ever become remiss in his obligations, either by failure to pay, supplying poor or inadequate rations etc. , we are entirely justified in leaving him for a new employer, even if this is in the heat of battle!

If you are a potential customer or want to join us, our door is always open. Come and visit us! [www.mercpaper.com]
Another way to contact us is to talk with one of our top staff: Either you look for our guild leader Mawdryn or for Cumeri, Vinculus or Cedesit.

Small advice right off the bat from a very quick skim: Ranks. Just take out the 'Merc' part in each and you'll be good :)

The original one was the "Mercenary Guild", then we had "The Nightshade Mercenaries", then the "Dwarven Mercenaries", and now "The Mercenaries"... did I forget any?

I think you got them all. I know that "Nightshade" still exists, although I have never personally heard of "Dwarven".

Nightshade mercenaries were 98% ooc from what i saw, not trying to make fun of anyone or say bad stuff and such. But I don't actually consider that a clan. Mercenaries should-.... well what am I saying?

ok ok fair enough... Look i've seen a few merc guilds come and go, like big boss man elvi said, dwarvish mercenaries... All in all every group has been ooc, not really doing their jobs as mercearies. (ie: taking sides in wars for tria.) And most of them just get wrapped up in the game itself (which i can understand, PS is a very fun game)

I like the  post here Cumeri, it shows that perhaps a real mercenary guild will come along?... I can't wait to see more in game.

one last thing, the picture is awesome. :]

I agree with Earl. The name "Mercenaries" is one of those names that is used because it sounds cool, just like the name "Bounty Hunters". In most cases the actual guilds have nothing to do whatsoever with the real meaning of the name though.

I do hope this one will be different and provide a better example for the game.

Thanks! Sadly, we aren't well known yet, and we have been losing a lot of active members, so we haven't had many decent rps. If we are invited, they often get cancelled. Yes, I have heard that many Mercenary guilds were ooc, so we are going to try to fit in. Hopefully, with this board, we'll become better known.

Yes, I love the picture, too. Mawdryn and Vinculus worked a long time on it.

Good luck with it. Seems a simple straightforward idea although many have messed it up due to bad rp and total OOCness. I hope you do better. I'd still advocate a name change though.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

I might be able to help you guys into some role plays... as of late i've been bored out of my mind in ps... Being a bandit can be boring when nothing big is going on... I might have some work for you guys... Perhaps chorval and the mercenaries will talk...
