This has been a long-standing issue and is a known bug.

Just because it's been around a long time doesn't make it less relevant.  If this is a "long-standing issue" and "known bug," then the complaint shouldn't just go away, but become "why isn't this fixed yet?"  I know the developers have plenty of posts on new bugs to sort through too, but, old or not, it still needs fixing, and if people complain about the same bug over and over again, it might annoy a developer enough to get it fixed.

Annoying the devs is frowned upon.

Actually, making the pets stay longer is not difficult at all. Just set the time they are allowed to stay at more than 5 minutes :)
The problem is the bugs that made the devs decide to set it at 5 minutes in the first place. There are several bugs with pets, some of them causing ghosts of pets to appear (or even summon other characters). Some of the problems that that caused was severe lag on the server, and GMs spending a lot of time teleporting to pets and removing them. These bugs are far from easy to solve, as they are not easy to reproduce. And as there are so many other bugs and features to implement, choices have to be made. That, and I think the pet-problem may have been forgotten a bit. Annoying devs to make them aware of that will not help, but more subtle hints and mentioning pets here and there may make some dev decide fixing this is more fun than fixing other bugs :)

You can vote on bugs in the bug tracker to escalate them, i suggest that instead of this.

that is only if it is a new bug and not duplicate bug from the old tracker [i think this is a bug in the old tracker somewhere though]

The bug I was thinking of is
http://www.hydlaa.com/bugtracker/bug.php?op=show&bugid=1600
so on the old bug tracker, but you CAN vote for it. I just did!
There is no way to see votes though, except when you are already looking at the bug. And even if it is possible to sort bugs on vote, such as on the new bug tracker, that does not mean anyone is looking at it :)

I thought this was at least partially related to an (unimplemented as of yet) skill.  Isn't the idea that you have to have a certain repertoire with your pet for it to stick around long?

And yeah, in my first week as a GM, I must have sent some 200 pets to the NPC room...fun times, those.
"Here's to lowering caskets of old friends choice and consequence we'll birth a new day with the death of an old and start over, start over.  Here's to burying hatchets in those who you'd never call your friend...we'll birth a new day with the death of an old day and start over, start over!"

That may be so as well. I looked in the code and it tries to load a script "CalculateMaxPetTime". If it does not find that, it will use 5 minutes.
Since I don't think it will be that difficult to make a script with that name that produces variable times larger than 5 minutes, I assume the ghost-pet problem (and other pet problems) will be the major factor at the moment :)
