the dueling is not intentional. there is a bug report on it. if you want it changed faster, maybe vote using the link by the summary under prority and severity at http://www.hydlaa.com/flyspray_upgrade/index.php?do=details&task_id=413

Maybe post a comment thing or two as well

Please only add a comment when you have information that may help. The cause is known, no need to say "me too" there :) If you have good suggestions that are not yet mentioned, feel free to add them.

as for a warrior kicking a mage's buttocks. that's hogglewash and hootenaneey combined.  for so long mages have had no role in dueling.  By the time they cast their spell, they died 4x's in 4 seconds by ulber trained sword.  It always went something like this:

[mage casts spell 'Hope this comes out in uh-oh I see death approaching']
[mage gets practice points in Hopelessness Way]
[warrior hits mage for 4 gillion]
[mage died three times]

They had no chance. So if anything let this be some sort of balance even if it lasts only but a few moments of a version. 

Realistically though, Harry Potter would kick King Arthur's a$$ and we all know it.  Let's be clear about that.

  • I get "WARNING! Object ... is not closed!", "Could not open image; ...", "Could not load image; ...", "Could not load texture: ...", "Invalid dimensions on border drawable: ...",  "Stat request failed because CelClient not ready for ...", "... is deprecated. Use ... instead", "Got DR message for unknown entity", "Mesh Factory ... not found", "Failed to set material ... on part ...", in the console, and some of these more than once . Are the details of interest for anybody?
  • I thought I can forget EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, pure virtual function call with v19, now they celebrate their resurrection.
  • Cannot find DBGHELP.DLL is new.
  • Who planted all the grass? It looks simply ugly. I met the citizens of Hydlaa as neat people, who surely don't let their gardens become jungles. I'm sure they prefer lawn rather than meadows. [If I see a green ground in an RP game, my fantasy is good enough to imagine this as grass. I do not need to see hundreds of single stems for this.]
  • Shadows are nice, but I could live - and roleplay - very well without them. I always enjoyed the architecture in Hydlaa. Now it looks like wearing sunglasses all the time. ["-fullbright" seems not to work anymore, does it?]

I'd have to agree here. I've heard lots of complaining about the new dueling system (but haven't been ingame to actually see it). Fact is did warriors run around with blades trying to perfectly time their hits? No. Thats all player skill. Firstly if you were wielding a claymore or longsword then you'd have no chance of swinging quick enough. With short swords or daggers and both people running that should only increase your chances of missing.

Then you look at people who rp mages. You can't run while casting! You can run while swinging a big sword around and kill someone but theres no chance that you can run and cast a spell. The dueling system favored blade. Now its even. Mages will try and keep their opponent at far ranges to cast spells. Warriors will try to dodge and get close enough for the kill. It makes much more sense that way.

It's not intended to be that way. And contrary to what Parallo said, the devs have not decided on character skill in the eternal fight between player skill vs character skill, and if they really wanted hit&run duels to vanish, there would be a really simple solution to achieve that goal. The current situation, as some have already mentioned, is a side effect, that was not planned, and it will be fixed some time soon(tm)

There will be other solutions on how to even out a fight between a warrior and a mage, but I'd rather think it will happen by more powerful spells. The base is already there (many attack spells, regeneration spell, shield spell, absorption spell, etc), all it needs is a bit of balancing, which will be done in the future. And yup, casting a spell while running should be possible, as it would only be fair.

Given the changes made since the days of fights looking like people running in circles oblivious to each other, I think its clear that they have decided on character skill. After all, it is a role playing game.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

Right now, the drawback is that spells just arent strong enough. the side-effect didnt just balance it out-it gives mages a huge advantage over fighters. Even though that may be the fact if magic were true in real life, this is a game, and the combat system should be balanced.

Are you sure? I've missed plenty of times with my spells. Plus there are many times when a spell will fail.

I actually don't see many advantages for mages. Magic drains your mana and if doesn't replenish extremely quick so you really only have a certain amount of spells you can cast before your drained so you have to avoid the opponent till it does replenish. Physical stamina doesn't replenish quickly as well but I do think (not sure so don't hit me if I'm wrong  :P ) it lasts longer depending on how much you have.

But back to the topic.
I the idea of a tutorial but I think there should be an option of whether you want to do it or not. That way those who frequently make new characters don't have to go through it every time. So far I heard that a way to get out of it was dieing but the fact that there soon will be a punishment makes this a less attractive option.

First of all Congrats to all those involved in bringing the update!!!

The only thing that's been a real problem for me seems to be the grass, the lags and crashes seem to disappear when I try the grassless mods posted earlier. Also I think the grass in the towns looks a little untidy anyway (but ok for pastures if there was any farming), especially where it grows out of the pavements.

Regarding the PvP change, I've not really been involved in any before but appreciate there may have been some skill involved before which some players are missing. However the old system was far from perfect favouring those with high Q weapons etc. and as mentioned earlier definitely not favouring mages. I watched a tournament some months ago and, to be honest, the old system from an observer's point of view was not just unrealistic but a joke (how on earth someone could possibly strike a lethal blow while running backwards and forwards 20+ yards is beyond me). Perhaps some sort of compromise is needed with say the attack perimeter being set somewhere between 3 to 5 yards (hence the current PvPers would just have to adapt their skills)?
