Question about Player Rules
« on: October 27, 2007, 12:14:45 am »
I noticed a paragraph or 2 about player guilds and roleplay not being permitted to promote, participate in, or otherwise endorse racism.  I'm all for keeping the racial slurring and bashes in regards to RL out of games, because it's senseless, and no one likes hate.

My question is, are we allowed to Roleplay our characters as avid racists IC (towards the other, fictional races, of course)?  Like perhaps a dwarf who would as soon jump off a cliff before he'd be seen consorting with a dastardly elf!

I would like to know before I start creating a character :)

Um, yeah... That's a stupid question, even if it is topic-worthy. We aren't commies.

Well I don't have a quote, but the player rules seemed to be very finite on racism and hate, and I don't want to create a character who is borderline genocidal if he's just gonna get slapped around by a GM for being that way, yanno?

It should be ok as long as you don't go overboard with it and generally start annoying people.

Well I wasn't looking into being a Warlord or anything, but something more along the lines of the character having had a history with one of the other races and harboring a very nasty ill-will for members of that race.  Kind of like the elven races in Dragonlance hating half-elfs for their mixed lineage.

If your character's actions only reflect what he/shebelieves (and not the player) then it's roleplay. GMs will not punish anyone because of this. So, yes, RP racism is allowed. Just keep in mind that it's been done before (and you might want to look for those threads in order to get an idea of how to approach it originally) and that Yliakum society is not a reflection of our world's and that the racial tensions we experience IRL are not remotely experienced there. So, you'll have to ask yourself: what makes my character hate this or that race? It can't be as easy as "I was taught that we are superior" because such concept is not part of the society's idiosyncrasy: people are simply not educated that way.

Does that mean there were never racial conflicts? No. There must have been only so long ago that the only thing that remains from it is the law that condemns any racial violence with death (which indicates that at some point in history it was a big deal). So if you want to RP a racist you can, but keep in mind the context and the repercussions and, most importantly, to keep IC and OOC separated.

Would it not be standard to have tensions between Kran and Lemurs given the religious differences? Its like the northern-southern Ireland thing except with race equating religion rather than religion equating politics.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

You are allowed to roleplay as such, as long as you keep in mind that doing so vocally is a punishable offense by Octarchal law.
