I'm stuck in first person camera mode

No matter what I do I'm stuck in first person. I tried resetting the shortcuts and reinstalling nothing worked.

by chance are you backed up against a wall?

No I can walk around but I can't change the camera mode anywhere. I also get the weird message exception_priv_instruction at 2517cae4.

Can you try deleting camera.xml (keep a backup copy) in <planeshift>/data/options?

It should be recreated automatically upon starting the client.  That's the only thing I can think of.

This is going to sound like a really dumb question but, did you try just zooming-out with the scroll wheel (assuming you have one) on your mouse? Once or twice I logged in and everything was in super up close first person type mode and this was before zoom even took you to first person view as default. The first time it really threw me but, after a bit of experimenting I found if i just scrolled out it'd reset and life was good.

I figure you probably tried this already like 80 times but, just in case thought I'd mention it.

I tried deleting the camera.xml and all it did was lock me out of the game completely. I just put back the copy I made of the file and it let me back in. I still can't change camera modes.

I don't have a mouse, but I tried using the shortcut keys to do that but it doesn't work. When I try to switch camera modes I get an error like this

I'm still having camera troubles, but a I also crash when I walk sometimes. I get a message saying:

You don't have a mouse? ... But a technically similar input device, like a touchpad?

Yeah, i have a touchpad, but no middle mouse button equivalent. Whatever was wrong with my camera was causing a lot of  other problems as well. I could log in sometimes, couldn't more than two steps other times, etc... so I decided to completely reinstall. This solved to problem so far.

I wonder if this touchpad has a function like "[Fn]+vertical" = Scrollwheel?!

Anyway. Don't play on a laptop.
