The other day I was at work (on a very slow day as a cashier in a small store) while my guildmates were in a crucial meeting where rules were being voted on.
I actually played Zork in the late 80's when I was in my teens & know the power of engaging in an environment through a text-only interface.
I was REALLY wishing that I could participate in the meeting.  I didn't want any visuals at all.

How hard would that be to simply log into the chat window?

Probably not. But to my knowledge this was not a MUD. Could be wrong, though.

I agree, I was actually thinking of this as I was playing with my android and ran across an application for WoW. It wouldn't be much that is needed just maybe a chat and character display. Simple features like this are available on the WoW application. So here is the challenge, all of you who are great coders, lets see if you can make an app for Iphone and/or Android. From there the transition to PPC and so forth will be closer. I personally would love to have something Planeshift on my Droid, other then the wallpaper and music.

PS: Sorry to bring an old topic back, better then creating a new one I guess :)

Well I think it is very very possible for PlaneShift to be run by a PDA or iPod/iPhone/iPad, having the game have a far lower requirement, such as graphical ones, grass, shaders, shadows, just a basic texture and wall and object. Races will probably need some more mobile work, but can be done.
A communications box, inventory, settings, states and skills, information, petition. That is about it that is of most importance. I would probably say you click on the crystal to open the toolbar then pick what you want to open, then the toolbar hides again. Communications and shortcuts will be very small, the tabs will probably need to be cut down into System, Main, [of choice], other. [of choice] will probably automatically be Channels and people can change it to Guild, whispers, alliance or whatever. other you will click on and it will pop up next to it guild, alliance, whispers, auctions, group, etc.

This shouldn't be to hard to do. Just a full GUI restructure and some things in the requirements to be lowered.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

as it is right now perhaps the ipad could possibly handle a ported client?? though it would probibally have to be jailbroken to avoid the app store bs

highly probably not, it's just as likely as running ps on a netbook... you may can, but even if you can, you really don't want to ;)

I have run PS on my ipod. I used a remote desktop system and PS together. The processor on the ipod isnt cut out for the job.

Good idea :). I am always aways away from home and it would be good to just check on the game ( at Melbourne for example) on my Iphone. But planeshift is still an unfinished game and I don't think it will go to mobles before the game finishes.

even if finished an iphone can't stand on the engine requirement starting just for the api compilancy which is just opengl ES 2.0 while ps requires opengl 2.1, this letting alone the gpu and cpu performance of it. you'd need add support for all this as a minimum to the rendering engine, then you need to add also the atomic ops for the cpu the specific phone uses
