Ubuntu Wubi?
« on: November 05, 2007, 05:42:13 pm »
Hey guys, i was just wondering if the Linux version of PS would run on Ubuntu Wubi version 7.10?

For those of you guys not familiar with Wubi it simply acts as a much more user friendly way of getting Linux on a Windows based machine. It installs Ubuntu just like a program so it can be un-installed with ease if you dislike it (but you wont trust me). Its still in Beta and the only disadvantage is that its slightly slower then it having its own partition. So for those who are interested in trying it out but might have been too scared to in the past, you don't have an excuse when something like this is on the net.

Download it here http://wubi-installer.org/

So let me know if anyone gets this working.

It should just work, although is pretty pointless.

with the plethora of live cd's dvd's available it seems a rather pointless exercise

the whole Wubi idea, if you wish to try linux and are concerned about messing up your windows install then use a live cd it doesn't copy anything to your hard drive at all, like I said IMHO a rather pointless exercise.

its also pointless that there is a Windows Binary anyway, what would be the point of installing wubi, then installing planeshift in wubi, when you could just install planeshift.

It would be like me running Windows XP on a VM on my Slackware box to run open office.. pointless.

Depends on the speed of the CD, Ammount of RAM you have speed of the RAM, what is on the live CD you are booting (DSL boots in like 40 seconds for me) etc but live CD's are not really designed for playing things like Planeshift, they are mostly used to demostrate Linux\fix problems with a PC.

which brings me back to my original point...the only difference with Wubi is the slightly reduced hard drive access speed. You can do anything as you can with a partitioned (i guess normal) ubuntu.
And for people like me using a laptop where installing the legit version partitions another bit of my tiny hard drive....would be a nightmare...hence the purpose of Wubi imho.

wubi sounds like a good alternative to running a linux install in vmware in doze.  That is far from pointless, if I'm understanding right.  As for running ps in it....pointless, but i would be tempted to try.
