chatwindow -> Tell -> switching to main
« on: November 08, 2007, 08:15:27 pm »
i found something to be edited
something confusing
when i select a character (player) and select the chat-tab "tell" and write, its switching back to main instantly

shouldn't it just send the message to only this person?
cause thats how it works with NPCs. ???

Actually, I think this could be waaaay more frustrating than helpful. It'd probably just end up like the "sit" message where instead of just saying "so-and-so takes a seat" it says "so-and-so takes a seat next to Bob" simply because you had "Bob" targeted on accident and didn't even realize it. Can you imagine how many conversations would be messed up just because you had a person targeted without even realizing?

Over-the-top example:

So-and-so: Hey Fred how's the family? *unwittingly has Bob targeted*

Bob: Uh... I'm not Fred.

So-and-so: Yeah, I know that... But, I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to my buddy Fred.

*Fred stands there blissfully ignorant anyone has even said his name.*

So-and-so: So Fred?

Bob: I'm still Bob.

So-and-so: Darn you Bob, I'm not meaning you!

Bob: ...

So-and-so: [Guess you're afk]

Bob: No I'm not.

So-and-so: Gah! Bob, who asked you?!

Bob: You did.

*So-and-so and Bob go on like this for 3 days, 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 33 seconds longer... Fred never hears a thing.*

Okay, so it's not exactly realistic but, you get the point. :P

if you use the f key when the chat window is not active you will /tell the last person who /tell you. It is not ideal. It might be nice if there were abbreviations that worked in the /tell window such a @nick means /tell nick, @$ means /tell target etc.

DeadSomething has a point. It is not that you click on a person and anything you type on the main tab goes to tells. He wants to target a person and then switch to the tells tab assuming that from now he can send tells to the targeted person.

We initially had a problem with this as well and eventually decided on for now anyways having a separate window for the /whisper (our equivalent to the /tell command).  Ech person gets their own window so if you are sending /whispers to two people you have two small chat screens on the screen that can be moved and scaled.  This DOES have the disadvantage of getting a bit unruly however so the plan later is to move them all into one window with each person you have a conversation with open in tabs on that separate chat window.   I think its a better solution overall and more intuitive. I've always found /tell type chat in PS to be the most cumbersome part of the chat interface.

Heh, I actually forgot there even was a tells tab.  :-[ Long ago I opted for tells to always show up in my system window and haven't looked back since... blinking tabs are the bane of my exist. ;)

(Yeah, I know it's a lame "bane" to have but, the day people were registering for personal banes I overslept and when I finally got to the place all the good ones were taken. :P)

when you're talking to an NPC, you're targeting the NPC and then selecting the NPC-Tab in the chatwindow...
and why doesnt it work the same way for "Tell" ?
target a playerchar and select the Tell-Tab...

it would work - it does in so many chats and games!

not the main-tab, but the TELL-Tab!
