There was once a band of 15 year old Elves, though one of them was 21 and not very bright. They once helped Santa, but they misbehaved and were sent to Siberia where they were kept in cave. Three days later one of them ran away and met a very attractive African woman named "Sophia." He got a job and had children and the rest of the Dark Elves went to live on their home.
Their offspring became known as... The purple midgets. And the 21 year old, not quite bright, elf joined a black metal band with lyrics referring to how Santa was mean to them. The band was called the Dark Elves. Later on Santa forgave them and they went back and became a happy family again. Sophia still lives on the North Pole.]

Santa Claus lives in Lappland and is actually called Joulupukki. He is said to be giving away presents these days, but in truth, many ages ago he was known to be a creature of truly vicious nature. It is possible the lyrics about Joulupukki's ill treatment of the elves made him reconsider stuff and that's why he gives away presents now.
As to the elves themselves, dark elves (dökkálfar), more commonly known as black elves (svartálfar), originated in Nordland and evolved from light elves (ljósálfar), although no one knows when, or in fact, what for.
