Hm, if I were an auctioneer, I'd place it in a busy spot. Down an allyway or next to a smelly plumbing system isn't going to work out too well. You want a place where people can see you and join in.

While that's definitely a realistic approach, be prepared to handle new players that are attracted to the crowd and will ask their gazillion questions. Also be prepared to deal with people who think it'll be fun to disrupt the event by bidding silly things or making false bids.

A little privacy has it's advantages and disadvantages.

For everyone that is interested, what would be a good timeframe, in Greenwich Mean Time, would be best for everyone?  I would like to see what we could do to accommodate as many people as possible.
