Just wondering
« on: December 15, 2007, 12:55:58 pm »
I've noticed a single "racial intolerative" post at Oja board and it made me to think about that. Just don't laugh. I was wondering if there's any cats and apes in the world of PS (well at least known or remembered). And if there are apes, do they eat bananas or not  ???. I was RPing in my head a story about a conflict in Ojaveda between Ylians and Enkidukai after one foolish ylian said "myau" in a tavern full of enkis.

Racial intolerance is actually not very likely to happen. The people of Yliakum know no racism.
Quote from: Main Settings
The land of Yliakum is a melting pot of races with different culture and origin, mixed and integrated by living together over the centuries. Racial suspicion and hostility are completely unknown, given that the distances between cities are not great, and trades are a central part of Yliakum society.

Sadly people seem unable to be original and always end up dragging racism into their roleplay. Bad, bad people! You should be ashamed of yourselves! What is so appealing about disliking people for being born a certain way?

 Don't get me wrong. It's just an imagination - a thing that rarely can be stopped by an act of will, and i don't really think it should. I've just imagined that situation and how could it be finished. In my scenario, an insulter was dropped alife into the bureal well  (resulting in permadeath), and an incident was immidietly forgoten, therefore anyone knew there is already a precedent. I could not stop myself from commiting that horrible act of never seen violence  :-[.

And finally, do we know anything about cats, apes, and bananas? I'm afraid i will loose my sleep before i know it.

*edit*

I think i should not start the topic. The Devil comes when you call 'em ))

You really, really need to read the History.  History of PlaneShift You can then use your imagination with what the settings are. Over all there isn't supposed to be anything in Yliakum that exists in real life as far as I know. (Though there are certain things in the game that people have argued about in the forums when it comes to having some similarities to real life.)

Ahh i've read it. There's nothing about cats.

"Only two races are native of the huge cavern: the Kran created by Talad and the Lemur created by Laanx. All other races are said to arrive from magical portals connected to other worlds."

So some things can still be remembered, like a Sun, for example

* zorbels chuckels

I am just trying to picture my character Zorbels (Fenki) petting a cat. I think she would eat it rather than have it as a pet. :P

:) In all seriousness I can't really tell you if there are cats or apes in PlaneShift, as I don't think any player can. I think only a Dev or Talad himself could tell you.

Because frankly, Lemurs are just better than everyone else.

It would be... if it weren't true...

In all honesty, I think that racism is somewhat justified in Planeshift since the differences between the races are so distinct. Not shocking for the Xacha or Lemurs to be elitist, since they are in general smarter than the other races, etc. The Klyros might look down upon others due to their ability to glide, etc. The Kran might find other races to be unstable and "hasty"(not to use an Ent-ish term) etc. etc.

I'm not saying run amok with it, but I don't see it as completely unjustified.

Well I can see your point ... but I don't know if having different traits encourages racism. Racism to me is saying All Xacha are better than all Kran, regardless of the individual. It's an unfounded prejudice towards a race.

Saying that on average Xacha are more educated and more skilled in magic than Kran, that is simply stating reality. Kran could say that they're stronger and resilient to Xacha magics in their defense. You see its no longer racism in my eyes when it's reality. I guess there is still going to be a bias towards those exceptions within a race and they can claim racism but in general, the racism should be less than in our world. Because of the interbreeding, shared history and hostile outside world I can see more reasons to work together and use eachother's strengths to compliment eachother than to create hatred between races.

Well, in my mind the more general racism would look a lot more like the forming of "cliques" in a high school than in the "brutally murder all those with different skin color". I'm not so much envisioning hordes of Lemurs picking on a a family of Nolthrir who stumbled into their village... more along the lines of a group of Xacha sitting by themselves in a tavern and refusing to mix with the "vulgar and unrefined" races of lesser intelligence...

It is outlawed; not unknown.
Because of the interbreeding, shared history and hostile outside world I can see more reasons to work together and use eachother's strengths to compliment eachother than to create hatred between races.
And yet in USA it works otherwise. Perhaps reason hasn't ever been the driving factor for the masses.

Well, actually we've had a good little PR there. He was roleplaying so good (even if he said just a pair of sentences) that i've even started to think he really thinks so.  Then i realised he cannot think so if only it's not an actual cat playing there  ::|, what is doubdfull. No one got hurt.
