Character descriptions
« on: December 15, 2007, 11:14:32 pm »
I've noticed a strange in PS that confuses me a bit. You see, there's a thing called "character description". I think it supposed to descript how the character looks (by the way, it could be great when introducing will finally be implemented). But it is not at all. Every description i read shows me a history of a character since he was a child, tells me his poems (some are great, really, but a bit offtopic there to my mind), or even reveals some of his psychological problems he (the character) even not supposed to know! To my mind those things should be revealed in game though actual roleplaying. I understand the devs themselves implemented the "default" descriptions that is enforcing us to do that, and maybe it does much to roleplay when a history of your avatar is written somewhere, but why don't we write it somewhere out-of-game? Please correct me if i don't get something.

And yes, i also have such description  :-[, but you see, i can explain, really! My skills in language are really rapidly increases, but still not too much, so i can't fairly descript how does my character looks like, and i don't want to leave him without description at all.

I layed my description out in a way that the closer you know me the farther down you should go.  It helps to simulate that we had conversations over the years about each other.

I am still not sure why it was done that way, and will continue the push to move the 'backstories' out of the 'description'.

Edit: If your language skills are not the best, a simple description will be fine. Example:

Height: Tall/normal/short.
Hair color: <color>
Eye color: Avoid very odd colors, glowing eyes, or color-shifting.
Personality: He smiles a lot when talking. -or- He avoids looking directly at you in a shy way. -or- His eyes dart constantly in a nervous way.
Clothing: Give a simple description of what you are wearing. Red tunic, brown pants, a thick black leather belt.
Accessories: Small, simple knife at belt. Gold ring on the right hand. etc.

Delete the default history. :)

Erm, now in all seriousness. People use character descriptions for many things. Some to tell their history, which I personally don't like because nobody can know someone else's history by looking at them. Others do put their character's looks in there, that's what I do too. And even others use the description to open a shop or share other things ranging from barely IC to gruesomely OOC.

By the way, if you want someone to review anything you write for spelling errors or stuff, I volunteer. ;D Feel free to PM me with a text and I'll gladly review it.

I second that.

Also, in my personal opinion, besides actual physical descriptions, general personality traits that someone might pick up from watching or conversing with your character are also ok, since due to the limitations of the typing RP, it's hard to sometimes pick up things that would be obvious in real life.

There is also a draw back to putting all your characters history into the description. No one will want to read it once they see it is like ulber long. I know we used to have to use it as a tool with telling strangers about our characters but now there are books to write in as there is now. I agree with Zan this is all OOC and people shouldn't be putting there history in their descriptions. Now that there are books implimented there is no reason to do that.
