Doing what I'm supposed to do; I searched and didn't find!

To determine if my hardware is sufficient to run PlaneShift, I looked through FAQ, and also came to the forums.

For those of you too lazy to read the game manual, here is what you need to play the game:

Minimum Requirements:

    * Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP, Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris
    * GeForce 2 or higher 3D graphics card (64MB on the card minimum)
    * 1 Ghz CPU
    * 512 MB RAM
    * 1 GB free disk space
    * 56k modem Internet connection

Recommended Requirements:

    * Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, Linux or FreeBSD
    * GeForce 4 or higher 3D graphics card (128MB on the card or more)
    * 2 Ghz CPU
    * 1 GB RAM
    * 1 GB free disk space
    * Broadband Internet connection

It's possible to play with 256 MB of RAM if you meet the other requirements and have a decent enough CPU/GPU.  Though, expect poor performance.  You can try some of the things listed at the top of the known fixes sticky to attempt to compensate.

It is possible to play on Windows Vista - make sure however that your graphics card drivers are updated.

It is possible to play on Mac OS 10.5.1 [Leopard].  (For a better understanding of which MAC OS versions run PS, please see here:  http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=18245.0 )

If you don't know what's in your computer, you really need to learn.  Goto your device manager, and look through it.  On Windows, the laziest way to just find all the needed info is to goto your start menu, then run, then type dxdiag and enter.  Your processor and memory are on the first page, your graphics card and video memory are on the display page.

I have an onboard ATI chipset. I'm using Mandriva 2008 X86-64 edition (I have a 64 bit hardware system).
1] the system requirements say nVidia, and I see posts from folks using ATI in their Macs. Clearly, ATI is supported.
2] no mention of 64 bit compatibility, but I'm assuming 64 bit hardware is not compatible.
Not to be rude, I'm just pointing out a few issues.
ATI, nVidia and S3 all make 3D graphics chipsets, and have made chipsets for something like 8+ years.
64 bit hardware has been around for over 2 years, and even laptops have 64 bit processors in them.

Please mention in the system requirements about whether or not you support ATI graphics and if there will be a 64 bit release? Thanks!

In my first post I provided a link AND I quoted the text of the link.

Thank you for the link, I guess I missed it.   One added question: What is a mainsite?

Recommended or minimum does not mean that setup listed is all that will, also not always are posts on the forum updated. The game does work on ati cards and many people play ps on them.

'GeForce' is the answer but you are not seeing it as an answer.

Although we have many so-called manufacturer 'names' saying GeForce, all GeForce cards are manufactured using nVidia graphics chips.
All of the 'GeForce' manufacturers buy at least the chips (or even buy whole cards) and put their own labels on the resulting boards. OEM computer makers do this also.

The features needed by other games have been limited to only supporting certain graphics chips because other chips don't always offer the exact same capabilities. It isn't a game makers fault if the graphics chips from ATI, nVidia, Matrox and S3, etc have incompatibilities, the problem falls to consumers needing to find SOME way to tell card makers to be compatible.

*edit*

Recommended or minimum does not mean that setup listed is all that will, also not always are posts on the forum updated.
:flowers:
I joined intending to only ask if ATI was supported, but fearing the potential wrath of readers (those who could quote chapter and verse about searching), I knew that I'd better research the forum posts. I saw ATI was mentioned for a MacOS post, but I already knew of the hardware post that said GeForce 2 was the minimum.  My history at TechIMO and at USALug says ATI is not GeForce, so I needed the clarify whether the minimums had changed since your helpful hardware post was made.

That is a great way to start out (to have the minimums posted), so naturally I wanted to suggest to someone that if the minimums had changed, please maintain that helpful post.

And a 64 bit version too, I see. Maybe I get to play after all?!

I am sure Geforce was mentioned only to indicate what kind of card is needed. It for sure does not mean an effort is only made to get it running on Nvidea and not on others. I have an intel graphics chip, and the game runs fine (for me :) ). As long as the graphics card (or chip) has enough memory, supports opengl , etc, it should run.
That does not mean there will be no bugs, and bugs may be more frequent in ATI cards (especially on platforms where drivers are not as good). But if possible people will try to find out the problem and share the solution.

Well, this sounds argumentative but, I assure you, I'm not trying to flame, I'm actually trying to explain:
Code: [Select]
software faqs say "RTFM"
I say "Which RTFM?"
I learn "FAQ is in the forum."
I read it;
I walk away because I do not have a GeForce card.
So in regards the stated graphics requirements, there actually are many acceptable possibilities, but it really is not MY responsibility to update the FAQs. I cannot update that detail. But someone with the appropriate position should at least try to update it, because it needs to be updated! Other games I've used have meant every syllable when they stated nVidia was required, so think about the amount of people that walk away from Planeshift when they read 'GeForce' (knowing the GeForces are all nVidia).

You folks go ahead and defend this inaccurate tome, I'm not bothering with this game because the community has all but bludgeoned me for trying to clarify what are important details. Way to go.
