Not having maps of some sort hurts this game a LOT.  As discussed here, many players simply do not have time to stop and tell a noob where something is, and since nothing is labelled, they would likely have to take you there anyway.

Common, it's not THAT difficult. I started out at the end of last year. I still know what that means.
Yes, if you want to go to a special place and you want to be there in 10 minutes, then you are screwed, but this is the wrong way anyways. Exploring the world is actually one of the most interesting things. Just follow a road and you will see where you end up. It will be a new place to explore, whatever it is.

1: Explore the world
2: If you really need a map, just buy a player-made one. I've seen some pretty good and detailed ones.

I don't think anyone is asking for a map like the one you get in TES4:Oblivion. I just want a very rudimentary one, with major locations and approximate directions and distances. Something a 5-year could have drawn...

Check out some of the ancient maps in this wiki-article to get the general idea:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonian_World_Map

Oh, how about a compass then? Or any way of finding out which way is north...
(the textures on the skybox seem to be stationary, maybe I can use it to at least find relative directions?)

If someone think a free map for all is too much how about giving new users a "Buy map" quest when they are about to leave the tutorial?

"You are now done with the tutorial and here is your first quest: Find [Insert NPC Name Here] to buy a cheap map."

That would be possible. There already is an NPC who sells maps of Hydlaa and Ojaveda.

well, it is YOUR game, but I really disagree.  The games you mentioned are the kind I dont like either (thats why I'm here.  Endless killing for levelling up is not my idea of fun either.  I was thinking of the original dnd games.  turn based action was ok, but real time is so much better.

but having a knowledge of where everything is is not godlike.  People who are explorers or travellers end up having a lot of knowledge about a lot of places.  The more places one knows about where they can do things, the MORE options you have for roleplaying.  Just because stupid games have a mapping system, doesn't mean it is a bad idea.  It is kinda like saying you are here, in the city of your birth, but are clueless as to where any restaurants are, laundrymats, stores, etc..  No one exists in their world without knowing where MOST things are.  We know where Texas is.  We know there is a town there called Dallas.  Even tho we haven't been there.

mapping doesn't make you less sociable (roleplaying).  not having time to relax and just enjoy others company and do what you want is what hinders roleplaying.  If I have to worry about which buton does what or spend three days just finding what I'm looking for, then I am not gonna stop and try to roleplay.  I'm too busy having to worry about where things are I might need or want.

I haveb't found a map in the game yet.  Maybe if I had one, it might be sufficient.  That is another reason I came back to Hydalla.  I can see that you are stuck on the "no mapping thing", tho.  Too bad.  I am SURE it is hurting the game.  Too easy to get lost and too hard to find things.

oh yeah, Oblivion's map is a PERFECT example.  Roleplaying game to the max.  Mapping function.  Sweet!

A compass would only work if you had coordinates for where u are and so could write down where a city or store is.  Laborious, but workable.

I kinda like wandering about and finding things, but knowing how to get back to somewhere u wanna be is crucial.  Being lost is NO fun.

(Yes, I DO go on...but I am only trying to help.  Really!)

maps and compasses have been suggested many times before. and will be suggested many times hence.

they are planned(tm).

patience grasshopper. all shall be revealed in time. usually short after it is in game.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

Sometimes I think I should make a macro saying "Why not ask an NPC?"

Either bartender can tell you the location of any NPC in Hydlaa or Ojaveda.
Just about anyone can tell you the location of another area from where you are. You can ask them "Where is Ojaveda?" "Where are the Eagle Bronze Doors?" and so on.

Every time I say this, it falls on deaf ears or people pooh-pooh talking to NPCs. I put that in there to help you, not for my own benefit.

I have used map and compass a bit in RL and I am reasonably skilled with it. Give me a map, a compass and a starting point and I will find my way pretty much anywhere. Heck, one good look at the map will often do as I have some skill in finding cardinal directions even without the aid of a compass.

The geography here is different though. Without a proper sky our usual cardinal directions are pointless. The crystal in the middle however sounds like a good point of reference. If we had proper shadows we could even tell in which direction it was, we wouldn't need a compass at all. Just learn how to interpret the shadows...

Where is the suggestion thread then? I think a map quest may be a quick and easy solution for now...
(I don't need mapping btw, only a map)

A sense of direction

I already posted this link some posts before.

Even if you are a good scout, just follow the roads and they lead you to places.. Ask players where the road goes and NPCs about where to find certain places. Yes, it would be nice to have the crystal at the right place and shadows cast directly by it, but this is NOT easy and fast to do. Just have some patience. You are not the only one playing this game and other people can find their way without it, too. Just play a while, you will know where things are after you went there once or twice.

adding an automatic mapping feature would rid the game of the architect skill, so no. i disagree with the people who want a mapping system anything like that.

I am also against automatic mapping, but in favor of the crystal being in the center of the world (not only imaginary) and maybe shadows and arrangements like that. But I am also aware, that this will not happen in the near future.

Good link but the thread seemed to have it's mind set to spirralling out of control. Some good clues to the basic geography of the game in there but also excessive amounts of wishful thinking and unneccesary math.  ;)

I totally agree, automatic mapping is unrealistic. *Maps* on the other hand isn't. Just show me where to find a crude map and I fill in the blanks myself. And so will everyone else if someone tells them how and where to find a map.

So I ask again, is there a "quest suggestion" thread?
