Learn to have a little fun.
« on: December 30, 2007, 10:58:53 am »
Roleplaying does not always have to be 'Woe is me!" *casts arm to the sky dramatically*

Have some fun. Kick loose a little. Give your characters a breather and let them laugh once in a while, and MEAN it. Come on. The best times I have had in the game are when I was laughing as hard as my characters were. In honor of this, I give you a new siggy. Look at it, read it, roleplay by it. And for crying out loud, LAUGH about it!

*edit* (siggy was too scary to see in all my posts.)

Nicely said Underthemoon, and how right you are. I'm notposting to add a point or make a statement here really, just to add my experience to yours. Neither Proglin or any of my event characters were perfect, all of em had at least one little flaw, or a collection of big ones. It's fun to ocasionally bump against a table as opposed to *with great elegance Scurfy jumps over the tables just barely touching them enough to generate enough lift to get to the next table*. Drama is great, drama is something people like. But in the end... we all play for fun and I always thought it was amusing if not hilarious to see characters fail and knowing it's creator was ROTFL-ing, so to speak.
yours, the entertainer

The definition of Role play according to Webster’s dictionary is:

transitive verb
1 : to act out the role of  *role*play a shy person*
2 : to represent in action  students were asked to role pay the thoughts and feelings of each character — R. G. Lambert*
intransitive verb   : to play a role

The problem I see is that there is always someone telling someone how to role play. Someone saying ‘That is not acceptable.’ or ‘That is to dramatic.’ or ‘You cannot play an idiot.’ or any other number of objections.

That takes away from the creativity of role play to begin with. I say, “Cheers to the people willing to be unique and different. Good for you because you do not have to fit into their definition of role play. Keep up the good work and do not let anyone tell you what you are doing is wrong.”

[Underthemoon, you knew I would have something to say didn’t you? My guess is you never met Frak who in my estimation was a great role player because he was so unique]

I am very curious to see what others think.

Happy New Year to you UTM.

You are mistaking 'unique' with 'dramatic' Leama. Dramatic is far far FAR from playing a unique character. Everyone and their uncle has a "Woe is me" oh-so-set-upon character. My past is so terrible! Weepy weepy please feel sorry for sorry for me.

A well rounded character is far more fun to be around than a Drama QueenDebbie Downer they are not.

It's quite strange indeed that almost every person had some terrible event in their past, *cough* character creation doesn't help *cough*, that's why my character has a humble and standard background. Simple.
We're not evil. We're simply amazing.

So then Underthemoon I am dramatic. I admit it. My character is small, weak and always afraid of being hurt by those who are mean and nasty. Never once has anyone said that ‘little me’ is too dramatic in my role play. It gets laughs and some even enjoy trying to protect me from the murderous characters in game. I think it is fun. Does anyone I role play object to my character and how I play her? You have to had role played with me to answer. Again I like to think I am unique and different with a sprinkle of drama added in. Nothing is wrong with that.

Wow... typical thread... Mooney posts something brilliant... Most people agree... Neko has no opinion and so posts pictures of cats, and Leama takes it personally.

I have to say that I agree though... Phinehas has always, in my opinion, been a "serious" character... He's not one I created to play a fool or something else just for the hilarity... On the other hand, he is pretty far from being dramatic.

And as usual, I agree with everything Mooney says.

I have an opinion, but as global mod, I should stay neutral.  I was simply summarizing for people who understand with pictures better than words ;)

First of all I agree with Moon, and nice siggy moon(I miss that show). There are to many up tight people and could learn to loosen up. He's right, try laughing a little. Even evil has a laugh. Unless your a mute you really haven't got a reason to not laugh once and awhile. Here it looks like this ... *Zorbels points below*

You know it's kind of funny because the way I see it is there are two different types of drama in game. OOC Drama and IC drama. IC drama should be taken as just that, IC and not meant to hurt anyone personally. Your character should respond to IC drama as you see fit but only with your characters attitude/personality not your own.

Drama OOC can get tricky and cause some issues with in the community. OOC drama should just be kept to those who have an issue with each other. My first day back in game and I was pestered by OOC drama that had taken place since I was gone, and it made me not want to log in because the people who were causing it didn't seem to get the picture that I didn't care. It is a shame that there are some who don't seem to understand that this is a game of RP and when you babble on about your RL issue's with your life or just people you may have an issue with in game, it ruins it for those of us who like to keep that seperate.  I don't like RL bizz in my roleplay, it changes the mood. I can't for the life of me see why there are some who do? I wonder if they have ever heard of yahoo chat rooms?

Anyway laughing is good and people should do more of it. That's not to say you have to change your character. Whether your dramatic or not ..... laughing is one size and fits all. Yes even the villains!

I've been outside, it's overrated and the graphics suck!

I guess I semi agree. Yeah, having fun is good and all in rp. Having your characters laugh, have a friendly chat, having a party in the tavern, they aren't bad things. My thought to this though is its a game and we play games for fun. If I'm the person who easily bores from rps in which you just converse, laugh, drink, etc then I may not do them often because I play the game to keep myself entertained, not my characters. So if the whole drama life is what gets you to enjoy the game then why not do so.

Guess I'm just trying to say that it goes both ways. If you can keep a balance between both and enjoy yourself then I'm happy for you but if you prefer doing one or the other to enjoy yourself I think thats fine too.  ;D

Well, lets not forget the IC RPs that may not be funny to your character, but is a good laugh for the players involved. I have a bottomless sack RP for Illysia that usually gets a laugh out of people and still cracks me up from time to time. Mind you it is fairly frustrating for Illysia since she can't find her stuff fast and she has to basically crawl into her sack to find stuff. But it's nice to have a laugh aside from or at your own character at times.  :D
