My question is: why hasn't anyone tried to domesticate them yet?  Or have all past attempts failed?

They have. That's how dogs evolved - domesticated wolves, selectively bred for various traits.

And derghirs have been known to attack krans in groups for food if other minerals are scarce.

Oh, derghirs and gobbles? Because it's against the law to domesticate them. I quote from the decree:

Semi-intelligent beings such as gobbles, biorlitrosans, gawerts and so on, while not meeting the criteria for citizenry of the Octarchy, are not to be trained or kept as pets.
