Open data files
« on: January 06, 2008, 07:12:48 pm »
Although I understand why keeping some of the games parts "secret" enhances RP, I think because that this is an open source game and should be open to peer-review and criticism publicly on the boards, it should be ok to post spoilers to quests. I also think there should be a smaller emphasis on RP, and a bigger emphasis on creating a game that is fun to play and can withstand different types of players.

Firstly, emphasis on RP does not conflict with "having a game that is fun to play and can withstand different types of players". It might conflict in your eyes, but that's just you.

Secondly, the game code is open-source. Actual content like the art and the quests are not, nor will they ever be made open-source. If you find certain errors or bugs in the quests, NPC responses, or the general settings, then you can forward your input to the devs via the Forum (special thread), the bugtracker or via PMs.

Don't you think the quality of the quests would be better if everyone could review them in an open way? Isn't that the open source philosophy? Also does having secrets give in-game advantages to players who know the secrets, making it an unfair game??? Are there cheats? (Like going up to an NPC and saying "Give me x tiras", and then getting that much from the NPC???

Secrets in an open project seems...unprofessional and un-GPL like...and unfair to newer players, as well! Secrecy increases the learning curve quite a bit too, which chases off the noobs.

Lastly, if this game ever got popular (like WOW popular, or even ArchLord popular) then people would post spoilers to the web.
