Financial donations to PlaneShift.
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:44:37 pm »
I have 'trolled' (constructively criticised) PS, ad infinitum.

I have also donated money via pay-pal, via the PlaneShift web site. I did this because even though I have thrown teddies out of my pram, I am a devoted comPlainShifter and I am impressed with:

- The game play.
- The continued evolution of the game play.
- The nuttas on irc.eu.freenode.net #planeshift
(although perhaps 'impressed' is not appropriate here)

As long as I am playing the game I will happily donate money, annually to the increased quality of the game.

Have you (the PlaneShift people) thought about getting together some merchandise that us comPlainShifters could purchase?

- Mugs
- Shirts
- Model Trepors, Tefusangs, Ulbers, etc.
- Calendars
- Posters
- Model Krans, Ynnwn, etc.

Me and my fellow comPlainShifters are passionate about the game and if we can help increase the quality by donating funds so you can buy some dedicated test computers (for example) OR if some of the people and organisations who kindly spare their time and effort making PS possible, could be rewarded in some way, that would be awesome too, in my opinion.

How to generate funds for PlaneShift?

PS.
The bitchin' will continue regardless. For example:

I do wish that Talad would stop using the 'F' word (free) as an excuse for any of the games ills. Because that's bolox. Just because something is free has nothing to do with its quality, it's to do with the attitudes of your developers; so don't do it again.

We've talked a bit about this but have not really set moved on anything.  It would just add another layer of work that we would have to do :).  Once we have a properly formed 'Public Relations' department this would be their responsibility.  However, we've not had much luck finding good people for that.  Most times people 'try out' for PR because they don't have skills to work in other aspects or think that PR just means talking to people on IRC :)

Well, it falls into 2 general areas I think.
First,  is that people complain about stuff that is obvious such as "You should get a stable server" or "Get rid of the client lag".   Those cases might raise the ire of long time players and some people connected with the project.  :)
Second, is that that some people are under the impression that we are actually a development company.  While it's great to be compared to the 'brick and mortar' companies out there we have to make sure that the point is that the game is done at the speed of life and not at the speed of business.

But you do raise a good point.  Just because this is a hobby doesn't mean we should not try to do our best,  at the moment this responsibility is mine.  As long as people realize that we really are trying to do out best it should work out for everybody.

There are loads of threads about this and all of them have the same answer:

Planeshift is FREE by own choice.  If you insist on donating, donate to the Engine: Crystal Space 3D, this indirectly helps Planeshift to evolve as well.

The excuse of this being a free game isn't about money in my eyes, it's about all the Developers being volunteers. Most of them have actual jobs outside of the project and only work on this in their free time. Donating won't make them quit their jobs. No amount of donations or whatever else you can think of can give Devs enough financial security to quit their real jobs. ::) The only thing that can do that is Talad making a very good business plan, which includes selling Planeshift to paying customers only and making it a commercial game.

Like Acraig just said, they're not part of a company, only a volunteer project. As for not trying their best ... I actually find motivation among a lot of Devs to be pretty high because they do this out of love for the project, not financial reasons.

I know it's been said before, and I know Acraig has responded to this query by stating a lack of PR manpower, but just for the record, i would like to state that I would totally purchase a Planeshift t-shirt.  Especially with the slogans "you have fallen off the edge of the world and died," or "this is message from the server, you should not be seeing this."  I realize fully that it's not a priority now, especially as it's been repeatedly stated that their is no real need to raise funds at this time.  I just wanted to make clear that were anyone to undergo such an effort, he or she could depend on a purchase from me.  For the record.

That's true, though I can see both sides.

If I wasn't such a talentless hack, I probably would've joined the team about a year ago. By now I probably would have made a significant (or, at least 'noticeable') contribution to PS, which I would be very proud of. If someone said "you should work harder, for absolutely no reason other than my impatience", I'd be pretty pissed. What do any of the devs owe us?

Then again, it IS frustrating when you're enjoying a game, only to find that the devs don't really care about it ("I'm just a volunteer, it's not my problem if you're not satisfied"). I'd prefer if Talad was deeply hurt by allegations that his game should be better, rather than shrugging it off.

Hurting the same spot again and again creates Callosity ;) and the one who makes the allegations must be considered as well, I mean "oH I've played it a couple of times and i didn't know how to get out of DR within 10 minutes so you suck!" wouldn't hurt anyone  (yes I know, over extreem  ::) )

PlaneShift doesn't need funds, it just needs labor.

The reason is that you're too damn busy playing an awesome game.  Same goes for me.

curious: does this have to be done officially, or can a crazed bunch of PS fans pool their money and time and do it themselves? Seriously...how hard is it to get a whole bunch of tshirts silk-screened?

Just saying that there is a lot you can do, as a player, without needing to be part of the 'team'.

nothing like cuddling up to an ulber late at night...

i guess the good thing is that it won't eat you ( I hope).

So, here's another question: What would the money go towards? the next batch of ulber plushies?

Well the art of PS is licensed, So Ulbernauts and the likes are too. Now I'm not sure but I think it's illegal to merchandise something that is licensed ;)
So a Player couldn't do it, and c'mon would it really be worth investing in? It would probably take more time to set up then maing a quest I think ;) :flowers:

That's just it... I've talked to Mooney about this before... The art and everything is licensed, so players can't just do it... or I would have. As for the devs, they'll never get around to it... As for whether it'd be worth the time and effort, it'd be pretty easy to do via cafepress.com or one of those similar things...
