Casual Gamers
« on: January 09, 2008, 01:05:47 pm »
Hi, I used to play games alot, but now I'm married with children, I can barely have more then an hour or so a week for games. Is there ever going to poss for a sort of part-time gamer Plane Shift account.

I tried sevral characters but always found I had to spend many (real) hours doing nothing but waiting in the sewers killing rats, for a tiny bit or money to save up for my first sword. Standing around mining takes for ever too. When you only have maybe an hour a week to play, it's a bit of a bummer having stand around in front of a cliff for half an hour or wait in the seweres to kill a rat, that may possibly give you something you can sell later for weapons.

I think in the future, many games will be mmorgs and they need some way of allowing casual players access to them.

Well Risc... i hate it as well sometimes, and the truth is it does take alot of time. alot of people however skip the actual training of the character and simply roleplay. you dont need to kill rats to be a good warrior from a small village or a mage trained in the crystal way out of a temple. even then an hour is a small amount of time, but it might be a more rewarding hour. as to making the training system "quicker"  i dont think itll happen. you would need a seperate server than the one where it took everyone a long time to train and then no one would play in that old server. im not saying its impossible though, who am i to judge? xD. hope i helped

Hey maybe some day you can buy a fully trained character at Ebay ?

(I heard about people doing this from other games)

It depends on what you want out of the game.

If you're interested in training your character and gaining levels .. then obviously the more time you can spend on it the more succesful you'll be. However there  are plenty of players on planeshift who, like you have lives, jobs and family to divide their time between. Most of those people don't bother to gain levels but just enjoy their time by roleplaying, doing quests, exploring and interacting with others.

in most games that is against the terms you agree to before you are allowed to play and will get your character deleted upon finding substantial information that this did in fact happen.

Well, I wanted to make a bowyer and make bows to sell to people. I thought I had to get money and stuff and go up levels to do that. So I can jsut do that without killing things and stuff? Don't I need money to get supplies to make bows and where do you learn how to make bows?

Frankly, if you're interested in actual game mechanics, you're not going to get much out of PS on an hour a week. I suggest finding another free game to play that's a little more settled. Spoonscape, for instance.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but if you're a casual gamer, nearly any game besides Planeshift is a better match for you. It's apparent that Planeshift is a very hardcore species of MMO.

I play infrequently as well and I would hate to think because of it I am not welcome. There are many people here who think real life is more important then the game but enjoy it when they have time to play.

Welcome to PlaneShift Risc, we're glad you're part of the community!

Like most MMOGs, PlaneShift does require a substantial amount of time if you wish to level your character up, but unlike the other MMOGs, PlaneShift has a unique twist to it which has been mentioned by several previous posters: roleplay. There are threads on this forum that are dedicated to instruction on how to roleplay if you need any prompters.

If you  still wish to gain skills with your character there is a quick (relatively) means of gaining trias and experience, which would be quests.  The great thing about quests is that you can stop in the middle of them to attend to real life duties (ie your family), and come back to them at your leisure.  Just remember to take notes on what the NPCs say and to save them, then you can have a fun way to gain experience and trias.

In the meantime, I hope you choose to stick around and look forward to seeing you in game!

Casual gaming is fine, I drop in a couple of times a week for an hour or two. But that's because I have no absolutly no patience where leveling up is concerned. I just come to roleplay. However, if you want to become the strongest warrior around, you'll need to be a hardcore addict.

Hehe, tried that and it doesn't work well.

Me : Press the number 1 on the keyboard sweety.
My 3yo : Ok.
Me : Anything?
My 3yo : Red words on the screen daddy.
Me : Try again sweety.
My 3yo : The same thing daddy.
Me : Press it again, it might do something soon..

.... 5 minutes pass by....

My 3yo : Daddy this is really boring.
Me : Try just once more..
My 3yo : I got gold words this time.
Me : Yay, you got a gold ore for me!!
My 3yo : Daddy this is really boring...

Gotta love how players are still willing to wait 5 minutes for one piece of gold ore :)
