Choosing a Guild
« on: January 16, 2008, 03:01:00 pm »
My character in game is not affiliated with any Guild, but I noticed that most other characters are members of some sort of Guild...

I have some questions regarding joining a Guild. Assume that I am not joining a Guild that has friends of mine, but am choosing one that would befit my character (Diaboli, studying metallurgy and swordmaking, likes to exploer...rudimentary magic skills, but may pursue magic in the future)

Are there material benefits to joining a Guild, or is it basically a social club?

How does one "find" a Guild to join, just ask other players?

I can read about Guilds in the forum, to get some idea of what they are about, but if I am to join one, I would like to pick a well established one, that I know will last and will have plenty of "brothers and sisters". Is there a way to judge the membership of these Guidls, or just keep an eye out for members running around?

If I join a Guild, and decide maybe I made a bad choice, can I jump ship to another Guild?

Is there some sort of "Guild quests", where the Guild may have work to do for it's members?

Thanks for any advice, suggestions, or comments.

Some guilds are just a friendly clan to be in other guilds are rp guilds with set rules for its members. The best way to find a guild is to ask people ingame in an rp fashion about thier guilds and get to know them then decide what guild is best for your char. Most guilds will allow you to leave and return if you wish at another time, there are no rules saying you cant leave a guild. Once you do leave a guild you can join another but if you do leave and join many guilds you might be looked at as a guild hopper and most guilds dont like those type of people. Some guilds do have tasks for their guild members but it depends on the guild. Just because a guild is active now does not mean it will be as active in 2 months or a year. If i were to be looking for a guild right now i would look for a guild that fits my character no matter if it is a new guild or an older one, knowing that a lot of guilds do tend to become inactive over time, but they get be rebirthed as many guilds have. Sometimes if you join a large guild you might just feel like another face in the crowd but if you join a small guild you could find that you might be the only member on at certain times.

i think this is a good question.  There are not required quests to join a guild implemented by the game, and only very rarely will guilds require you to go on a mission of sorts to join.  The best way to get to know about the guilds in planeshift are to ask people about their guild in-game.  Ask what their goals are, how active their members are, etc.  Don't jump into a guild right away, you want to make a good choice.  However, you can leave a guild at anytime if you wish and seek out a new one that may better suit you.

The Pros and Cons of being in a guild are often dependent on the guild you are in.  Pros would be that if you join a guild seeking the same goals as you then you can have help in them.  Often times, working your way up in a guild will result in working your way up in the PS society [but not always].  It increases the amount of friends you make and people you know, which spreads your name out so you are not just a no-name person.  Cons would be having to act according to the guild rules, and you have the stigma of your guild [which may actually not be a bad thing].  Your guild's enemies will also become yours.

I'm sure there are some more pros and cons.

Some guilds may have jobs for you to do, but i think most do not.  If you join a guild, you can push your guild leader to create quests or jobs for you to do.  Search around yliakum for a while, taking note of all the guilds and then, if you decide to join one, pick the one that best suits you.

Oh, and if they have websites, it is good to check them to see if they are well put-together and the guild is somewhat organized, but this is more OOC.
There are two types of people in this world: The Pinky and the Brain.
Which one are you?

Material benefits: Rather less. Some guilds try to collect a fund for coming guild house auctions and may expect donations from their members. But you may get a little support for urgent needs now and then, possibly.

Social club: Surely. You meet chars with similar interests, or at least same race (and both meet in a clichee...).

But you decide about the reason why you join which guild.

One way: Let them recruit you.
Another way: Ask to meet the leader who may invite you.

The presence is a measurement of members activity. There may be huge guilds with hardly any active member. Little guilds can be more present than you may expect.

That depends on the rules of that guild. According to game mechanics, you can leave a guild by yourself. "Guild hoppers" are in general not very welcome. And once you left one guild, they may not let you in again.

There are some guilds with in-game quests or similar expected behaviours. Examples:
- Knowledge Seekers: Makes scientific courses for member "students".
- The Royal House of Purrty: Expects roleplaying as main actiivty.
- The Way of the Hammer: Different paths of development with milestones to gain Guild Points.
...

I am pretty sure that many guilds keep their members active, with or without guild point donations, with or without a hierarchy you can climb.

Not to forget the intruiging guilds you wont notice as they have their tags hidden.

This is based on my opinion. I think guilds are wonderful and they do have there place in our wonderful community. When I joined a guild a very long time ago I tried hard to keep up with the rules set forth but because of my bad computer at the time I was unable to keep up. You see to me a guild is like a family. A person gets to know the members and develops a bond with them. To this day I am still friendly with many in that guild I was in and role play with them often. Though I have never joined another guild because I believe it is a commitment I might want to join another ‘family’ someday but for now I stand alone.

For any new player I believe, again in my humble opinion, it is important to develop your character and know our world. Once you have done so and know what your goals are then I think you will be ready to make a choice as to whether to join a guild or not and which one might be right for you. It is true that they seem to come and go though there are a few that have been around for a long time and are well respected.

I would love to see an up to date list of guilds that no longer exist because when reading the forums a person can say, “Oh that looks like a great guild by what I read. I want to join them.”  Later to find out the guild has been long gone. Of course that is where role play in game comes in also.

Once you have made some friends and know the game better then I think it would be a good time to make such a decision. I wish that people would respect this thought and not jump on the new player to join their guild after being in game for only ten minutes. It is unfair. Many great players who have been in game a long time stand alone and there is nothing wrong with that either.
Life is lived forwards, but understood backwards.

A particular benefit that I have seen for many people joining RP guilds is that they are taught to RP better in an environment that is helpful, yet has standards. I've seen a lot of people whose RP I initially had to ignore because there was no way to try and RP with them and maintain any sense of reality who have then joined a guild and learned to RP well. As a matter of fact, that happened to me when I first joined.

If you go by actual game mechanics right now, there is very little advantage to joining a guild (this will change in time).

The benefits all come from the social aspects. It is nice to have a good guild at your back when learning the game and to keep in touch with folks. The folks that stay the longest and have the most fun are generally guild members.

Depends on your character, but  most join guilds as you know. More pros then cons in my eyes , unless your character is against a guilds goal etc move to another.

For example if your a  up and coming mage  you could join the Imperial Scholars

Or a warrior you could join the Imperial Guard

Perhaps your the buissness type so you could join the Imperial Trades

perhaps if your a shadow join the Imperial Agency

So the Dark Empire has all the bases preety much covered just ignore all the others  :P:P

 :innocent:

Hehe but its mostly a social benefit like the others say

Ah, so this is the new Imperial Promotion Thread... :P

Well, of course, one can only talk about facts he really knows. Therefore I am not able to comment about the Empire...

Reading about guilds is a good start. Talking about them (especially in game) is even better.

BTW: Thank you for your compliments, Phinehas! (about an educational value of RP oriented guilds) :innocent:

Oh not a problem in the slightest... considering it was completely unintentional as I avoid the House of Purrty like the plague for both IC and OOC reasons and therefore it could not have been a reference to you. But hey, I'll take the kudos anyway.

You could always choose to remain unguilded. The part of standard guild initiation where they dip you in molten gold can be most painful and is sometimes fatal....
