Red Way and Crafting
« on: January 29, 2008, 09:22:46 am »
Part of the Red Way descritpion:
"Most spells in this Way are fire related, and the majority of metal workers have knowledge of it."

i am confused.. i never heard of ingame influence of Red Way on Metallurgy or Crafting.
but it could be nice.. is this implemented or maybe will be? how?

ps. by the way - i still dont know - how stats (for example Will) affects casting? as i know, higher level of Way (for example Red Way) makes spell stronger, but what about higher level of Will? will it affect spellcasting?

[as always - sorry for my english]

I would assume it is more of a cult thing among crafters instead of the Red Way skill directly affecting the rules of crafting.  If you were a crafter, it probably wouldn't make any sense to cast a healing or a mind reading spell on a weapon.

You wouldn't know unless you tried it.  There used to be a time when rules to magic spells (like Summon Missile) were publicly available, but that is no longer the case.  If you really do think that your stats have no effect on what a spell does, then blame Xordan.

I think its more like you can replace the fires of the forge with fire spells instead to smelt ores and such.  Controling the heat of your spells would probably be easier than controling the heat of a real/non-magical fire.
There are two types of people in this world: The Pinky and the Brain.
Which one are you?

Creating and sustaining a magical fire is much more difficult than starting and sustaining a non-magical fire, and likely a complete waste of effort for all but the most demanding and intricate metalworking. However, Red Way could help in managing the existing heat in a more efficient manner.

Maybe speed up the time you have to wait to heat something hmm? Depending on how high your red way skill depends on how quickly you melt down an ore... (obviously if you have 0 red way it would just take the normal amount of time) - Just a thought.

Modification no. 1: Then again it could affect the quality... Your RW level that is.

Darn right. I'm going to be really ticked if it turns out that every smith and his brother can use Red Way to craft weapons.

I can confirm that Red Way will have an impact on crafting eventually ;) But it won't be used directly during the craft :P Work the rest out for yourselves.

(ETA of this stuff is this year :D)

Really? Try not to be too ambiguous then. The secondary skill bonuses could just as easily be for weapon proficiencies instead of any magic connection. I would suspect that is what is meant in the changelog quoted and not any special effects due to spellcraft. I suppose it is possible magic is included but I would assume that magical enhancements would require specific spells and that any bonuses for spell ability would be added in to the spell's effect. Perhaps you have inside information, I do not.
