[Guild] The Senate of Yliakum
« on: February 06, 2008, 08:17:51 pm »
The Senate of Yliakum

Who Are We?

The Senate of Yliakum was established to bring law abiding citizens of the Octarchy together in a cooperative community. We are here to help those in need of guidance and to provide a helpful community to those who seek one. Our guild currently has four classes that make up its main body.
1. Warrior Class
2. Mage Class
3. Crafter Class
4. Scholar Class [this is a purely RP class]
Our goal is to provide all members of the guild with all services they could possibly need in Yliakum. [we will have more classes as more things are implemented]

Guild Political Structure

Our guild is led by what is called a Senate. The Senate currently has seven members.
1. Consul: Calls Senate to Forum, leads the Forum, and enforces all decisions of the Senate.
2. Senator of Defense: Senator charged with protection of the guild and the general in instances of war.
3. Senator of Peace: Senator charged with inter-guild relations.
4. Senator of Warriors: Oversees the Warrior Class
5. Senator of Mages: Oversees the Mage Class
6. Senator of Crafters: Oversees the Crafter Class
7. Senator of Scholars: Oversees the Scholar Class
Each Senator, including the Consul, has equal say in all guild decisions. Each class elects Praetors on a monthly basis[OOC month that is]. Praetors are elected to help the Senators do their job and to help enforce guild rules. They, like the Class Senator, provide guidance for the class they are elected to represent. All Senators, including the Consul, can be removed from their position if they are deemed to be unfit for the position.

Services We Can Offer

1. We can offer you guidance in any of the job classes we have in the guild. [we have a lot of experience in PS we can offer to new players]
2. We have a warrior class that can act as mercenaries for guild members.
3. We will be able to craft what you need.
4. [we plan to hold many RP events.. this is the main focus of the RP class, the Scholars]

What is expected of you

All members are expected to contribute their services to members of the guild, if a member requires it. You are expected to treat other members with respect. You will not murder another member. You will not steal from another member. You will not commit crimes of libel and slander against another member. Please respect other members and have fun. After all, that is why we are all here.

[A few OOC things that have been asked about, on a couple occasions, about our name. First our name in no way IS the Roman Republic or any other government, IRL, that uses some of the same terms that we do (therefore it is not rp inaccurate). Our guild simply uses the terms originally used by the ancient Roman Republic. If you have a problem with this then think of it as we are introducing these terms to Yliakum or reinventing them if they have been previously used. Our name and structure, in no way conflicts with the lore or history of Yliakum. Second we are not a guild that is looking to represent all of Yliakum as a government structure. The name 'Senate'refers only to the guild political structure. RP is important to us and we put some emphasis in it, however, we do not turn anyone away because they do not plan to RP much.
Thanks for your patience.]

Is this governmental body connected in anyway to the octarch?

I like the idea of bringing politics to the players, but I'm just saying it would have to be a citizen's senate, and not be directly connected to the government of yliakum... Just trust me on that, it'll save you a lot of flames.

Why would the Octarchy and the Vigesimi need a senate to complete or replace their government?

I fear that you're setting foot on very dangerous ground, which belongs to Settings so I would suggest that you drop the 'of Yliakum' part and bring yourself forward as a new and original initiative which is unrelated to the Octarchy. Politics and government replacing guilds have been done before: the Dark Empire, the Royal House of Purrty, the Black Sun Union, ... Just don't do it in Yliakum's name. Yliakum already has a government.

HekemSkarr, I told your guild that the idea did not go along with the current settings.

Heh heh heh...

This is funny. I told them in-game that they might want to rethink their guild, but they seemed a little... spacey.

This is NOT connected to the Octarchy in any way.

Why would the Octarchy and the Vigesimi need a senate to complete or replace their government?

Politics and government replacing guilds have been done before: the Dark Empire, the Royal House of Purrty, the Black Sun Union, ... Just don't do it in Yliakum's name. Yliakum already has a government.

Again... This is NOT connected to the Octarchy in ANY way.

The Senate refers to the politics of the guild structure ONLY.. Read the ooc section of the original post. And if you are referring to the 'of Yliakum' part of our name.. What other guild uses the terms we are using? I say that we can state that as there are no other active guilds that have a Senate.

HekemSkarr, I told your guild that the idea did not go along with the current settings.

You're going to have to explain this better.. this has nothing to do with the Octarchy.

Every guild has a political system. This is how we describe ours.

Heh heh heh...

This is funny. I told them in-game that they might want to rethink their guild, but they seemed a little... spacey.

And this is an insult.. an incorrect one at that.. you never let me explain it to you in game as I remember.

It is not incorrect. I talked to two separate individuals of your guild, both who held the rank Senator, and neither of them really had any idea what was going on, or how the guild worked, or why it was named the way it was.

As for the rest, I strongly suggest changing your name... Naming yourself after a governmental body is just... not good. I don't know what happened to Xillix's comment here, but he did post that this guild(or at least the name) was against the settings. You can't just call yourself the Senate of Yliakum, much like I can't call myself the King of Yliakum. By all means have a senate within your guild, but don't call your guild the Senate. If I named my guild the Octarchy of Yliakum you would assume not that I had an Octarchy within my guild, but that I was claiming to be the government of Yliakum...

First of all you talked to the guild when we were finalizing the structure and rank. However it was decided that it would be run with a Senate to head it. Second you are making an OOC connection to the name while in game. Your character should not know what the term 'Senate' means unless they have come across another guild that used the term and even in that case it may not be used the same way. Many guilds use the term 'Council' and it is not the same for every guild. The term does not refer to a governmental body over all of Yliakum, it simply state that we are the only ones with it. We are not a 'governmental structure'.. we are a guild structure.

Though thank you for you input.. if people continue to be uneasy about the 'of Yliakum' in our name, we can always consider dropping it just to make people feel better. However, it does not necessarily refer to us as an entity of the government (because the meaning that makes it a connection to government is an ooc one).

Does sound a bit too official.

I would avoid stirring up strife among fellow players.

If there is anything I can do to make your guild more richly in line with the settings find me on irc.

I disagree that the term "senate" is not an IC term for a government. We're using it with the same meaning you are. Calling yourself the Council of Yliakum would be almost as bad. Terms like Octarchy would then also beOOC... how do we know what they mean?
Your character should not know what the term 'Senate' means unless they have come across another guild that used the term and even in that case it may not be used the same way.
Think about what that means... My character shouldn't have heard of the term, but your character has, and some other character may have and may have used it in their guild, too... What? That doesn't really work.

I'm not trying to attack you, but I am suggesting, as strongly as someone with no actual authority can, that you change it.

The term "Senate" is not the problem of your guild name, Hekem. The problem lies with the very unoriginal part "of Yliakum". This implies that you're the only senate in Yliakum and a government type encompassing Yliakum. Yliakum already has a government and it will never allow another to take it's place.

Sure you can tell me "It's not!" but that's what the name implies and obviously not only to me. :P

I agree. Although I wouldn't really be thrilled about a guild named "The Senate", it would most definitely be better than "The Senate of Yliakum."

I suggest you be a senate of something or for something, be original .. think up something fictive or even better, use settings to think of a better name. Oh and go in on Xillix' very generous offer. ;)

Gonna say what I said before in this thread, this time a little calmer, though...

Guys, if you're gonna have all of this government/whatever background, roleplay it. I see too many of your members just dancing around in the tavern and getting drunk, mumbling OOC nonsense and overall, just being a bunch of casual powerlevelers that can't differentiate between OOC and IC. It'd be nice to play the game in the future where OOC would completely be abolished from roleplay, but when there's a guild condoning behavior where people can pretty much do the stupidest crap ever and get away with it, it holds back the community. Then comes stubbornness where you don't admit there's a problem, and you try to kick and scream to justify yourselves to no end until you work up a bad reputation.

I hate to say it, but you're the type of guild that, when I walk into the tavern, I ignore everything you say. I'm starting to fill my ignore list with people from the same guild because they all act the same - powerlevelers trying to roleplay and acting so immature I feel like leaving the tavern until the crowd leaves.
