[GUILD] Helping Hands (resurrection)
« on: February 15, 2008, 10:06:27 am »
Introduction:
The Helping Hands guild was originally formed a couple years ago, and then disappeared after the gods took Ssar Aradyn to the black void, and shortly thereafter disbanded all guilds in Yliakum. Now that Ssar Aradyn has been returned to Yliakum, she has reformed the Helping Hands guild to continue the legacy of helping others freely.
Several of the former members formed the guild "Helpers of Yliakum".  Since that time, Helpers of Yliakum has become fairly inactive, and the leader of their guild, Melorek, and myself (Ssar), are working toward a merging of guilds.

Website:
http://hh.auk.ca/
All the current information on the Guild can be found there.

Guild rules:
    *  Help anyone you notice is in need of assistance or asks for help
    * Do not ever steal or trick people out of their loot, Trias or posessions
    * Lying to anyone will not be tolerated
    * Never beg people to join the guild, tell them about joining only if they seem interested
    * Share what you have with other guild members

The only exception to the helping others rule is when a person is being abusive to you or has already received a lot of help from you, you are not required to help them — but you can still help them if you want to.

GUILD PROJECTS

There will be several large scale projects that this guild will be working on, with the goals of improving society and culture in Yliakum.  By helping society as a whole, I firmly believe that it will be more beneficial than helping people at random (which I will of course always do, in addition).

I didn't want to ad-lib the project outlines, and then rewrite them on the guild web site ... but now that this is already posted, I will give short summaries of some of the more interesting projects that are planned for this guild in the coming months.

Firstly, Helping Hands will form a non profit organisation, giving 100% of its donations and profits towards projects to improve life for the people of Yliakum.

Free Book Publishing
This is a project which will allow anyone to submit a creative (and entirely in character) written work to our guild.  We will duplicate these books by hand and distribute them through our free book distribution system, free for all to use.  Knowledge should be free.

By-Donation Store
This project will set up shops in Ojaveda and Hydlaa as time permits, where we will offer a wide variety of common items.  Payment for items is by donation, though to avoid abuse if someone is paying very tiny amounts, they will be limited in what they are allowed to purchase during a day.  The store will help those who are seeking a particular type of harder to find item, or those who simply need their first weapon.

Postal Service
This project would require a guild house, which we have just started to save up for a day ago.  Anyone can deliver to us their letters and postcards (workers would not be permitted to read letters, but they would be allowed to read postcards), and we will freely deliver the mail to the recipient once they are back in Yliakum from the void [offline].  The message would be hand delivered to the recipient wherever they happened to be located in Yliakum.  Delivery fee is by donation, sender pays for their own book.

Newspaper
There have been newspapers in the past, but there is no widespread, freely available newspaper at this time.  We will accept unbiased articles from anyone (by unbiased, I mean it is not advertisement) and publish them once we have sufficient material, probably every couple weeks.  The newspaper will have paid advertisements if anyone wishes to have their biased message included (e.g. guild hiring information, upcoming paid event, etc.).  We will print the newspaper in sufficient quantity and distribute them as widely as possible, with the hopes that most people in Yliakum will eventually hear about it and give it a read.

There are other projects are in the works as well.

Guild News headlines:
    * Feb-12-2008 Jirolo Trygig has joined the guild.
    * Feb-12-2008 Aurrik Frostbaine has joined the guild.
    * Feb-11-2008 Turqni Faynel has joined the guild.
    * Feb-09-2008 We now have an alliance with the Helpers of Yliakum, which picked up where the previous Helping Hands guild left off.
    * Feb-08-2008 Adjusted the Guild Rules.
    * Feb-08-2008 Feliinus Deius has joined the guild.
    * Feb-05-2008 Cleonine Rrowrr has left the guild.
    * Jan-29-2008 Cleonine Rrowrr has joined the guild.
    * Jan-28-2008 Lucre Legrande has joined the guild.
    * Jan-28-2008 Zonthek Quiverloo has joined the guild.
    * Jan-28-2008 Maisent has joined the guild.
    * Jan-28-2008 Ssar Aradyn has joined the guild.
    * Jan-28-2008 After two years away from Yliakum, the guild has finally reformed.

Well...could you prehaps include some infomation to as what the guild is actually about? Like, what does it stand for? What's the structure? A bit more about the history?

The rules for posting guild threads are here: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=23102.0

Yet another newbie helping guild, you'll have to excuse me if I don't get blown away with the originality of this idea. :P

On the other hand I don't really see an organized newbie helping ingame from every day experience (My fault?)
So there maybe is room for new things even with newbie help.

But some more information about what the guild want to do/what makes it different would be nice  :sorcerer:

If you want more information just look back at all the other guilds with help, helping, and helpers in their names.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

Sorry for offtopic, I will stop that after this post.

But I want to recommend to read the whole post before answering. This is, without mentioning names, not be done by all who then usually make a pretty short answer (I appreaciate short answers, though  ;) ) - just to keep the forums nicer for everybody.

I agree that there are many guilds that aim at helping newbies, but this have been more in the past than it is now and... well... the rest I already said in the previous post.

Still curious about hearing more (what will make this guild different from some other help-named guilds )

Originality would help. Thats not easy in this market of helping. Perhaps some sort of reason aside for pure altruism for its existence. Overly simplistic guilds like this either die out or become mass-recruiting. Plus, one has to ask if there is need for a guild to help people. I have never belonged to such a guild and still have always helped people when necessary. Think hard on the motives for starting the guild. If it was just to have a guild with a nice little tag next to your name then forget about it. People tend to get the notion that they want a guild and then devote it to the first easy thing they can think of and in these cases its something that should be done already, guild or not.

All being said ... I have met Ssar and she is nice quirky fenki . It does become difficult to run this guild since it has little means of gathering resources while all members are busy helping others. She feels disoriented in the new Yliakum at times - may be this guild can operate or principal of reciprocal helping. If they help you - you owe them a favour in return they can call on. [Ooc - Bill Gates was the biggest money piler before he started giving it away, and does the reciprocal help sound too much like the Mafia ? ]

Though I myself am indeed a newbie. (I think... Is one a newbie after some half a year? Not sure  ??? )
However; the founder of the Guild has been (though absent for some time) around for years in PS.

What I do think is that, though there may be other Guilds around with comparable goals, I hardly ever see any of those. And ofcourse there's an alliance with the "Helpers of Yliakum" guild, and I'd say that gives at least some foundation for a future, because they have been around for two years...

In the "guildbusiness" I am an absolute newbie, and in my enthusiasm that I just joined one for the first time, I whote this post.
I feel confident that this is a good and just goal. I'd help members of the Outlaws, Thieves, Prophets of Chaos, or any other just the same as I would anyone else.  :whistling:

So... let's see what happens, shall we?

The guild is at a pretty fresh restart. There might be changes, there might not. My glass orb is not functioning properly at this time... :sorcerer:

In the meantime, you might want to look at the guild thread template and come up with your guild's history, ranks, and objectives. It is good to have guilds helping newcomers but it's more important for guilds to promote roleplay and articulating your purpose IC is a good way to start.

Though your nickname sounds familiar, I am not sure who you are.  I did not request that you add this to the page, and I would have preferred if you had let me make the posting to this forum.  I was waiting a few more days before posting here, because I was wanting to complete the web site updates with information about the guild's upcoming projects.

Yet another newbie helping guild, you'll have to excuse me if I don't get blown away with the originality of this idea. :P

As the founder of the guild, I can assure you that it is not "yet another newbie helping guild".  Firstly, the guild helps experienced players as well as newcomers.  I have spent much of my time helping more experienced players do some harder to accomplish things.  The help is not just "click on a menu item" or anything like that, it is often help with larger scale things.

The basic point is that all members are willing to help anyone at any time, it has nothing to do with their experience level.  The game is by far large enough now that even experienced players need help with things on a regular basis.

That said, our guild does not discriminate against those who do not possess a lot of knowledge.  The requirement is a willingness to help, and the persistence to see that through.  If I don't know how to accomplish something for someone, I will go around and ask all my friends and acquaintances how it is done, and then show the person.

Hmm... well, up until I got to the last post, I was inclined to agree about the general newbishness of the guild. Now it would appear that some thought has actually been put into this guild... It still seems impractical and full of wishful thinking to me, but hey, some thought is a good thing, right?

As you can tell, I'm trying to be more positive.

For a clarification and to defend myself from the oncoming assault, I would like to point out that "thought" and "effort" are completely different concepts.

Ssar,

Apparantly I'm not allowed to send personal messages here at this time. So I use a tidbit of  :offtopic: room here to sincerely apologise for making this topic without inquiring with you first. I'm afraid it might be related to my helpful nature, and my misconception that you had simply overlooked the forums.

Yesterday Yliakum was entirely taken by the black void, and I thought it a good idea to delve deeper into the info on the forums. When I noticed then that the Helping Hands was nowhere to be found...
That's more or less how it went down.

I'll make myself known in the guild window in PS.

No worries.  I understand that you were trying to be helpful, and that is appreciated.

However, this forum has a template to follow when posting about a guild, and you missed out on quite a bit of information that should have been included.  Some of this information is not yet available.  In addition, the guild rankings will be completely redone as the guild projects are worked on.  I was waiting until the details had been worked out before posting the web site and guild information publically.

Thanks.
