Corrupted characters?
« on: February 29, 2008, 01:00:22 am »
I have two characters that seem to have become corrupted.  Specifically, I can log in, load world, etc., but they can't interact with anything.  After running around like a Kikiri with its head chopped off, I get the message: "Your client has disconnected.  If your are seeing this message a connection error has likely occurred."  Stamina stays at 100%, inventory can't be moved around, and NPCs don't react.  I have seen other characters running around once or twice, which is odd.  I can create a new character and use it, so my setup seems to be OK.

Any help?

That sounds like some really bad nightmare I used to have when I was a kid... Never heard of this happening before. Dunno if anyone can help with something like that.  ::|

How do I check the ping time?  Should I use the standard ping command at a terminal or is there an in-game method for doing this?  The login screen reports apx. 200-250.

One thing I should have mentioned this in the first post is that I'm running the Linux 32-bit binaries on Gentoo.

I'll try reinstalling tonight, just in case that helps.  Who knows.

This isn't exactly a bug then, more of a performance issue... I'll notify the big bad forum mod xD

anyways, type /ping in game to show your ping, if it'll show up for you, it might not under the circumstance of your situation...

Do you live close by the server or do you just have a darn good connection Oo

My ping is appr. 400 (sweden, university network)

The server is in Singapore, but last I checked it didn't make a whole lot of difference if you were close to the server or not, to me, this sounds like a performance issue, and frankly im surprised at the good ping.. I'm not an expert on linux, but still according to that ping the game should be running very smoothly.

i think logically  the distance the data has to travel from the user to the server will effect ping time, the closer to the server the less the data travels making its trips shorter hence a lower ping, but a bad connection can throw all that out the window,
i get the same ping times and live in the UK i run PS on Gentoo Linux 32bit the only time i have had the problem that you speak of is when the server is on the way down and you kind of get trapped in your own little secluded world where the only thing you can do is run... ah now i see the nightmare XD

but come to think of it that cant be your problem because you are logging in where the problem i described is when you are logged in and every one vanishes but loggings would be down.. so eh.. nothing to see here move along   :whistling:

This is most definitely NOT a performance issue.  As discussed, my ping time is pretty good (it's a university network).  Even more importantly, I have a character that isn't in this "ethereal state" (so to speak), which is just fine.  When the first character had this problem, I just considered it a fluke and created a new character.  Then it happened with that character, too!  Something strange is going on, that's for sure.

I made a clean install just now, but I can't test it out since the server is down (and has been for several minutes).  If that doesn't work, I'll try a Windows installation, just to confirm that it's a server-side problem and not localized to my computer.

I'm not getting anything useful on the console ... are there any diagnostic flags I can pass in to psclient that might shed some light on the subject?

Server will be down for new version.
Maybe your problem will be gone then... hopefully ;)

If not my first try would be to contact some gms (or maybe, additionally #planeshift-build in irc)
Would be interesting nevertheless if you let us know if the new version solved the problem.

Well, in the brief time that the server was up, it seems that something got fixed for both accounts.   \\o//

Of course, then the server immediately shut down again, so I haven't had a chance to test this further.

However, I don't know if the solution was a bugfix in the new version or if the software just needed to be reinstalled.  And now we'll never know (unless it happens again...).

... Uh, oh.  It happened again!

So, I tried a reinstall ... no luck.
I cleaned out .Planeshift ... no luck.

I hope that doesn't mean it's server-side!

The only thing that seems to be consistent is that I think I happened to be sitting when the client was closed ('though my memory isn't perfect on this).  The last time the server went down I was resting, couldn't use the character when I went back in.  Good grief.

try /sit or /stand up  - you can't /die or anything else when sitting afaik.  It sounds like your client has a disconnect between your character and account and controls so either standing up could work or you may need a dev to kill your character.
