Character Skins
« on: March 10, 2008, 07:16:35 pm »
I can't seem to find any alternate character skins.  It would be nice if I could find at least one, then I could use it as a template to design a personal skin over.  It'd be really cool if others could see it in the game, but I understand the problems with that.

any help would be appreciated.

What sort of character skins are you looking for? The default files that you see in the game (meaning you can't find them within the PS directory) or fan art work? There have been several of the latter, but I can't recall any recent threads with working links. You can certainly search around within this section.

i am using the regular human male.  I'd just like to have his leggings perhaps a light green and his tan tunic be dark green with matching boots and belt.  I have done skinning in Freedom Force, so I should be able to handle this.  BUT, I was amazed that I could not find any real skins on the site, just pictures of applied skins.  I couldn't search through everything tho, it would take a couple of days.

Today I found that the DDS extension is not read by any program I have?  Suggestions?

It wold have been nice to have them in a format that is easily editable (Freedom Force used Targa files(?) .tga.  Then we could have sent in skins for approval and perhaps for use in the game for others to see.  I know it would be kinda a pain...but cool.

you need the dds plugin for your image editing program. Also any changes you do are local and will affect all chars that have the same skin as you and no one else will be able to see what you do. The game no longer uses other formats for char skins as they are trying to keep the package as small as possible and the dds format helps in that goal.

There is a DDS plugin for Photoshop from Nvidia, and a plugin for GIMP. DDS is a rather common format for 2D art in games - it's used by Doom3, Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights, etc. Most video cards natively support the compression format it uses, and this often means saving memory.

You can send skins for approval in any format you want. If the art team likes something, it'll be converted into DDS at the end.
