stopping planeshift
« on: March 15, 2008, 11:17:56 am »
the game looks interesting enough but i think i'm stopping playing planeshift alltoghether and wait a few months , this is no fun anymore !
i think what bothers me most is :
game is too dark , music is something wrong with ( these two things might be my pc i know ), there are no maps (if you're lost you're lost final) , and most of all , talking to npc is much too difficult, i'm fed up with hearing i don't understand you , it's like talking to a brick wall sometimes ; my last quest i had to bring a mug of some drink from one npc to another and when i found the npc i gave her the drink , she accepted but no matter what i said after i couldn't end the quest and i lost the drink , going back to the first npc was also no help ,he wouldn't give me another drink to bring to her and... i couldn't delete the quest
now i'm dead and i've been looking for hours now to get outta this place , when i finally met an npc he jumped off someplace and when following him i'm dead again whilst i was dead already (lol)
to end this thing , that was the final straw , as i said i'll wait till this game is out of beta and then i'll try again someday  :-\

It's a pity to hear that. I am sure all your problems with PS are solvable rather easily.

I assume you have a CRT screen, I don't know why, but on a CRT the game is always really dark, adjusting the gamma of the screen might help a lot with that (on TFT screens that issue does not seem to exist)

As for the sound I have no idea, I've turned it off most of the time

NPC speech: There's a thread here in the forums where the developers ask for help with improving NPC dialog, altho this is mainly for the normal NPC dialog I think you could even let them know about the quest thing. Getting yourself into a guild might also help you, not by giving direct spoilers, but by giving hints on the correct phrasing.

The Death Realm can be a bit scary and confusing for beginners, it is a bit tricky to find the way at first, but after a few times you'll be able to run blindly through it, however, talking to the player you followed and asking him for guidiance might have helped you too.

Maps, players have wished for a map and compass system since ever, but as far as I know it is not planned on implementing it (correct me if I'm wrong). Yliakum is currently rather small and with some exploring you will be able to walk blindly through all of yliakum one day (except for the sewers :D). I know how it is to get lost in the wilderness, I had that problem too at the beginning but eventually managed to find my way back, I am sure you are able to do that too, like everyone else has (a guild can be of great help here too, or IC friends who take you on a trip)

The game is made by volunteers, who work on it in their free time, I really doubt it will go from alpha to beta in a short time, you will probably come back in a few month and only notice a few changes (most changes are invisible for players anyways, but checking the history file of the source repository reveals all the changes on the code base).

Anyway, You say the game looks interesting enough, so maybe rethink your decision? :) If not, hope to see you back in a few months  :whistling:
So why do I love when I still feel pain?
When does it end, when is my work done?
Why do I fight and why do I feel that
I carry a sword, that I carry a sword through a battlefield?

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

There are ways to deal with darkness, Cebot has mentioned one. Knowing more information about your system would help people help you.

You can turn the sound off, I also remember reading a thread about music so maybe try searching...

Players can make maps, maybe you can find a nice cartographer in game who would be willing to make something to your specifications. Interacting with your fellow players is always a plus.

As for your last quest, there might be an issue with the quest itself - without following up with someone you will never know. This is why we have the bug tracker. Please either submit the details for the quest there or feel free to PM me, I'll gladly take a look at it. Just do not post the details on the forum.

As for the death realm, it's meant to be a scary place and difficult to get out of as Cebot mentioned. Talk to your fellow players or just follow some people. Death isn't meant to be a cake-walk.

Thank you for the time you spent here, and I hope to see you back. Also, please remember that the game is in development - and is in a continuous state of change.

I also would really like it if you did a bug report or PM to me on that quest so I can take a look at it.  :detective:

Nearly all players know which way is north in Hydlaa, all it takes is a simple question ;o)
Proceeding through life like a cat without whiskers, perpetually stuck behind the refrigerator.

I beg to differ. Almost all players figure it out eventually, if by nothing other than landmark recognition. I still cannot discern east from west by anything other than landmarks.

I wholeheartedly support the idea of a compass. I get turned around in BD all the time if i stray more than one hill from the road.

it might not have to point at a specific direction either. maybe you can attune it to the center of a city, and if you get lost, it can show you which way is that city.

north is in front of me, south behind and east and west are on either side!

music is something wrong with
You can always turn it off AND play whatever you wish in the background from mp3 player. Then you have guaranteed your favourite music  \\o//

there are no maps (if you're lost you're lost final)
Naah. There is always someone wandering "here or there" so you can always ask for way, with almost no risk of being ignored and most likely being led to place you are looking for.

talking to npc is much too difficult, i'm fed up with hearing i don't understand you , it's like talking to a brick wall sometimes
I had the saaaaaaaame problems when I was starting . . But I got used to :) And believe me I have ALMOST no problems now.
You just need to know some basic phrases such as :
"X sent me"
"I need Y"
"Give me Z"
or
"about XYZ"

And most likely its going to work that I can assure you.

he accepted but no matter what i said after i couldn't end the quest
Look what I have written above , solution is there :)

It is always an option but think about all fun you could lost this way.
Because real fun is mainly about roleplaying.
Good luck

OP: The point of planeshift is purely the roleplay, the only building you need to find is the tavern and you have found the purpose of the game. Sound is very buggy and has been for the 5 years I've been around. There wont ever be a map I dont think, due to the fact that you can make these yourself. Part of the fun is exploring the game yourself, there is little else you can do so this seems like a good use of time.

Coming out of beta is like someone with no limbs running in the olympics, its not going to happen any time soon. The questing system has improved greatly over the 5 years ive been here though it is still at this stage, which i cannot forsee being successful, despite the amazing amount of work the devs put into it.

With the current system of questing in PS its fundamentally flawed due to the fact that people are NEVER going to type what the Devs think you will type, meaning anything requiring a fixed response that isnt a 1-9 option selection will ultimately require: A: 4 hours of your time to work out. B: Cheating by reading one of the hundreds of walkthroughs. C: being told. D: giving up on the quest.

Looking back on this post it may appear slightly negative... Sorry.

Planeshift is a nice game for rp, but if you are looking for something that works I suggest a store-bought title like wow or aoc.

actually, the quest system has improved to the point that you can find the answer just by paying close attention to the way an npc words their instructions. for example, if one tells you, "Could you please ask [npc x] about carrots?" Just go say to npc x "about carrots." others are even simpler, with stuff like "Could you bring this to npc y? Just tell him I sent you." and all you would have to say is "[npc name] sent me"

@SovHed... your post is quite negative, and glosses over the work the devs put into game mechanics. The tavern is NOT the only point of the game, just the temple at which you worship the most holy RP. I agree that RP is a good thing, just not the ONLY thing that PS is good for. I also avoid the tavern at all cost because I don't like the element that hangs out there...  ;D
