Game Won't Start - Can't Find Info on Forums
« on: March 17, 2008, 01:19:08 am »
I have previously tried to install the game, but couldn't get it to work. So today I completely uninstalle and reinstalled the game and followed on site directions.

I ran the updater fine (using Run as Administrator), but when I go to run the psclient it gives me this error message:

Something unexpected happened in PlaneShift: Blue Steel
Details: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at 0388A4C0 (though the number isn't always the same)

Would you like to save the diagnostic file?

I am running Windows Vista with 1918Ram, AMD Athlon 64x2 processor.

I have searched through the forums and the technical FAQ on the main site and can't seem to figure it out. Please help!

Try running the game with "Run as Administrator".

Rizin is correctr, but there are two ways to get it to run on Vista, given that you have a vidcard capable, you didn't mention what vid card you had.

As already suggested, right click on the planeshift icon and click advanced, then "run as administrator"

However you can also get around this by changing the install path to C:\ instead of C:\program files during the install  process.

Make sure you have the most recent drivers.

I got the laptop for Christmas, so it's pretty new, and I just checked the site and I have alll the most recent drivers.

which site, the one from ati.com, or a different one?

what is the version number the drivers are using when you look at your system info?

No, the Toshiba site. I'll check ATI as well though. My driver version is 8.401.0.0 and I updated drivers through device mgr and it says they are up to date already. Though I couldn't find my specific model on the ATI site (the Radeon X1200M). Actually, I did a search and there are no downloads available for that one on the ATI site.

Oh, one other thing... it didn't place an icon on my desktop when i inatalled it. I added one, but still...

Should I still try uninstalling ans reinstalling to the c drive instead of in programs or is there something else I can try? Thanx

never use the built in driver upgrade thingy.  it never works.  never use any sites other than the card makers site to check to see if an upgraded version is avail.

if you did go to ati, you wanted to select Win Vista 64 bit --> integrated/motherboard --> x1200 series.

doing that takes you to this site:  http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista64/integrated-vista64

where as you can see, there it has a newer driver version than the one you are currently running.

Well, for some reason I couldn't locate the 1200 when I went to Vista 64bit, so I don't know what happened there. (Oh, I didn't go to integrated/motherboard, I went to Radeon - so it should be integrated/motherboard then?) And I was checking the Toshiba site for specs because that's the type of laptop I have. And while I do appreciate the assist, I'm just curious how 8.3 is newer than 8.4? Does it go backwards? I realize the update was just posted this month, but I want to make sure before I mess something up by dowloading it. And what should I download, the suite or just the display driver?
Thanx

As the official site says the newest version is 8.3 and you stated you had 8.4, i assumed you typo'ed and meant you were running 7.4.

I typically believe official card makers website over what people post, as time and time again, what people post is the wrong information.  Not to say you didn't, more so I'm quite cynical.

If you have the latest drivers, then I'm out of ideas.  Sorry I can't help more.

Well, I'm copy and pasting this straight from the properties of the device:

8.401.0.0

thx neways

*edit*

Ok, so I looked at the release notes and it turns out the 8.3 suite has an 8.471 version of the driver in it, so I'm gonna try that and see what happens.

*edit*

Alright, I downloaded and installed the updated driver, uninstalled and reinstalled the game (after a reboot) and I still get the same error message.

at this point, all I can suggest is that  you save a copy of the report it generates and send on off to our staff for review as directed here: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=31760.0

and the only other option I could suggest is to try and re-download from another source, as maybe the installer just isn't working right with the copy you have.  and try to reinstall cleanly with a new copy.  try one from here:  http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=31785.0

unfortunately, in this stage of development, I don't think they can really guarantee that it will always install on every system, so it could be that your system has something on it that cause the game to not want to run right.

I've got the exact same problem as our boyo up above here.
Hit the client, log in, get to character select, select character, load bar gets to ~90% before the error hits.
I've tried running in XP compatibility, as admin, etc. No go.

System info below -

Vista Ultimate w/ SP1
Core 2 Duo 6850
3 gigs ram
Nvidia 8800 GTX 768mb running latest non-beta drivers from Nvidia - 169.25
DirectX10
2 WD 500gig drives in a RAID0

I'll pop the crash file over to the address in the link you mentioned below.
If I missed any info you would like, please let me know.

Got the same problem, doesn't look like the .exe plays nice with Vista....
