Some odd reports from planeshift -v
« on: March 27, 2008, 07:32:37 am »
Loading a character in the BD with -relight. In no particular order.
Code: [Select]
WARNING! Object 'spikes_01' is not closed!
WARNING! Object '_s_stairs_01' is not closed!
WARNING! Object 'spikes_02' is not closed!
WARNING! Object 'spikes_04' is not closed!
WARNING! Object 'spikes_06' is not closed!
WARNING! Object '_s_sigil_03' is not closed!
Do unclosed objects cause memory leaks?

Code: [Select]
  Duplicate effect 'x_obj_spire' found!
  Duplicate effect 'x_obj_quad' found!
  Duplicate effect 'x_obj_star' found!
what trouble do duplicate effects cause if any?

Code: [Select]
Bad UV coordinates for polygons in this thing!
  [node: world,sector(name=bdoorsin),meshobj(name=Bridge),params]
Bad UV coordinates for polygons in this thing!
  [node: world,sector(name=bdoorsin),meshobj(name=Bird),params]
  ...
Bad UV coordinates for polygons in this thing!
  [node: world,meshfact(name=watchtower),params]
  ...
Bad UV coordinates for polygons in this thing!
 [node: world,meshfact(name=watchtower),params]
Do the bad uv coordinates just affect the texture lighting or do they have other possible bad effects?

In the previous program run without the --relight I got this as well (still relighting as I post)

Code: [Select]
crystalspace.collisiondetection.opcode:
OPCODE WARNING: found 2 degenerate faces in model! Collision might report
  wrong results!
Could the degenerate faces be the cause of the hole .... oh good to see the old tracker is nearly done, I'm wondering now if the new maps with the fixed ladders are out or if they are still coming, last time I went by the hole .... near the entrance pass (a couple days ago) .... it was still there, so I'm thinking not.

Is any of this useful to the devs, I cannot imagine it is never before seen by them.

"Not closed" simply means that the model has a hole in it - open faces that let you see inside the mesh if you're at a right angle. Usually polygons are removed if they are never seen by players, such as those on the bottoms of houses, fences, mountain sides you don't reach a position to view, etc. It shouldn't cause memory problems, but instead alleviate them since there is less to process.

Thanks K! I thought it was where, for example, you made a square but the last two vertices missed connecting so that instead of a plane you had a crooked line.  In this case if you then added five complete squares you would wind up with a broken cube. What you say does not really make sense to me, although I am not disputing it is standard practice, because if you leave off one face of a cube you wind up with 5 extra surfaces interior to the cube. It would seem more logical to me to just not texture those surfaces never seen. I suppose those extra surfaces would need to be deliberately built if they were to actually to exist, due to the way the software works.

Meshes are not double-sided by default, so if you remove a face from a cube, there's nothing inside. The whole thing becomes invisible when looking in :)

A couple of other errors are valid though. I made a report of them all and mailed them to Talad some weeks ago. He'll get around to it eventually.

I'm getting some of the same error messages, and many more.  Mine occur after I've launched the psclient when I attempt to log in to the server.  The client and everything simply shuts down after I type in my correct password.

First  sign of problem is this:
Quote
Mounting skin: /this/art/skins/elves.zip

I can't find these files anywhere on my system either.

But then it goes on and gives me:
Quote
Mounting skin: /planeshift/art/skins/base/client_base.zip
  psEngine initialized.
Using fontsize 16 for resolution 1024x768
Which suggest its all alright...

Finally closing with:

Aborted

I've tried reinstalling, but hasn't helped.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.  Still pretty much a new Linux user but picking up pretty well, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nate

nateperson, this is just a guess, but perhaps you need to run the updater? be sure to run it from a terminal. Hope it helps, otherwise, I don't know.

No go.  Says:

Checking for updates:
Checking for updates to the updater: No updates needed!
Checking for updates to all files: No updates needed!

I downloaded  PlaneShift-v0.4.00-x86.bin from the planeshift website.  Everything appears to have loaded correctly no errors I could find from the installer.  Same thing whether I run it as root or as a normal user, so don't think its permissions either...

Thanks ya'll!

Tried fixes Caarrie posted in:
http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32333.0
and they worked.

But only after I did as Rizin suggested in:
http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32288.0
and

changed all the lines from "6\.5\.." to match "7\.0\.." for Mesa.

Thats not the right thing to do though if a mesh is big enough that it makes a useful occluder of other meshes. Things like a house should probably be closed properly otherwise the culler won't actually do any culling using that object as an occluder which in turn hurts performance, sometimes significantly.
