Perhaps I'm just stuck in the world of Runescape
« on: April 13, 2008, 09:18:27 am »
But I'm new as of yesterday (Friday) and I am naturally having trouble finding my way around and talking to the NPC's and what not. My first instinct is to ask for help, but experience from Runescape tells me not to. I'll never forget how unfriendly the majority of Runescape players are. I'm wondering if, since Planeshift is so new, it has drawn a friendlier more patient crowd.

Also, I refrain from asking simply because I'm afraid of using the OOC settings IN the game, I was wondering how the majority of PS players feel about that. I'm used to using the brackets in RP's but those are simple story based one on one RP's sent between messaging systems on chat sites. I'm not much of an RP'er game wise, so I don't know if the opinion is different between the two.

Forget about runescape, ask for help!

OOC chat in brackets or /tells is fine. Try to do it in character but if you can't, and sometimes you can't, then just use brackets. ;)

Most of the people are pretty friendly, some characters are of a tarnished bent, shall we say, but most of the things you need to ask can be asked in an in context manner if you put your mind to it. Making the effort to do so will make the inevitable out of character explanations more forthcoming. Some things can be asked IC that cannot be answered that way. Making an effort helps. Not everyone cares so you cannot expect everyone to be helpful.

For example say you have a quest where you need to talk to Trasok but you cannot make him understand you you could say to someone something along the lines of "Harnquist asked me to deliver these tongs to Trasok but I cannot seem to make him understand me, do you know how I could get his attention?" This would be perfectly acceptable as in character dialog and if the person you are asking knows the quest he may well give you a clue. It is the same with anything. If you are having a specific problem with the user interface and it has nothing to do with your character then you could ask straight out. In that case it will be better received if you use [square brackets].

You should not be afraid to ask for help if you need it but some people will always rub you the wrong way and vice versa.

You'll love roleplaying eventually . If not, well, there are always people like me who prefer the thumbscrew personal approach to make people love it. ;)
Oh, and for your own sake, please don't spell the bad game out, it always disturbs my peace of mind. Been too often that I looked at the name in the last few days.

First of all, welcome to PlaneShift!

And don't worry no one expects you to know how to RP right away, none of us learned in one day.  And I happen to know that I for one am still learning everyday.
Also I'd like to warn you when you do ask for help IC just be careful who you ask ;) There are some characters that would lead you out to the wild and rob you blind, where there are others that would give you directions and maybe even items, just don't take it personally OOC'ly ;)

If you ever have any questions you can just send me a tell in game if you feel comfortable doing that, I may be an outlaw IC but OOC I am nice girl, really. ;)
Just don't tell anyone...I have a reputation to uphold you know?

Welcome DameonGrey,
from what I have experienced so far, the majority of all people able to help will gladly do so, the more since you know about []-brackets. For cases requiring some longer OOC-talk, better go to /tells, or /group, for not disturbing other people's roleplay.

Cheers, have fun in Planeshift!

I can remember I once received some tells with questions. Although i was helping, most of the time there was one annoyance: The asking people was complete stragers to me, they didn't introduce(i don't mean new PS introducing system) themselves and i felt like wtf.
It's always good to say something like. "Hi, i'm new into ... can you tell me ..."

Thats about how PS community is friendly to new playters. It is, unless they are noobs. Noob can be a person who behalves like he was center of the world and even though everyone answering his question don't think like that about themselves, the noob continues with his unchanged attitude.

I also wonder, is the in game guide so much scarry? I mean, it clearly say that if you say ooc its equal with a ban?
I just never did it. Maybe the guide needs another 1 or 2 sentences for explanation and that people aren't really /report ing you  when you speak OOC, but they could if you act like a noob ? <-- thats the short version :]

What you can failure tommorow, failure today.

I know of Runescape because my son was an avid player. I used to moan at him for being so addicted to it and now, ironically I'm addicted to PlaneShift so thats one in the eye for me. LOL

My experience has been pretty good and a new player here. I recently joined a guild and that has helped with the feeling of a closer group within the game. Maybe I'll come across you in game and perhaps help you with the bit's of knowledge I have.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy.
