Too many black cloaks!
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:35:51 pm »
Is it just me, or do way too many people in PS wear black hooded cloaks? It's getting really annoying. I don't know if people want to look evil or whatever, but there's better ways of doing that than looking like a Nazgul... Seriously, have some originality.

Black is in style this year.

I think that the reason to wear a black cloak is to hide your identity, unless there's some other reason I missed. If you want to hide your identity, and wear, say, a neon pink cloak, you might as well not wear one. Since everyone wears these cloaks hiding their identity, you really can blend in with the crowd!

Hm, I wear black (sometimes striped) jackets all the time. Pretty much everyone I know does too. Does that make me unoriginal? Maybe they just look/feel good.

Black cloaks were pretty common in medieval times, I'm sure, so there shouldn't be anything wrong with wearing one.

I think sometimes people place too much emphasis on originality.  If you can't do anything that's been done before, then you can't do anything because it has all been done before (this holds true in art too).  If something is good and feels right, then we shouldn't worry too much about how original it is.

Cloaks yes, but don't think true black would have been common since not everyone has access to good dyes.

However; dark green, brown, dark blue... Any of these colors would sill not cause you to draw too much attention to yourself. One of my characters has a cloak, for keeping warm, and I just didn't put the color at all. But wouldn't the guards be suspicious of anyone they wouldn't be able to readily identify later. I mean it would make their job a lot easier if they could tell if person they were looking for had a large scar on their face. If the cloak was really good and you really couldn't see the person very well, then I think they would get really suspicious since usually the only people who hide are those that have something to hide.  ;)

True you do have to limit originality, however; once the horse is dead, there is no need to keep on beating it.  :D

Brown cloaks are inconspicuous and fit the medieval setting. Black cloaks are just silly and would stand out in a crowd and in the dark. Only a fool would use one to try to sneak around, blend in, or hide their identity. Though, it does make the guards' jobs easier. Just go through and arrest everyone in a black cloak. You know they are up to no good. :)

Hey, I'm innocent  :P
I've actually started to change my characters' descriptions so they don't have black robes since so many people are doing it. When you really think about it though it doesn't matter. Someone will start a new evil fashion style and everyone will just copy again ;) [And I'm totally the first person I know, except maybe a few from ToY, who used the black robe idea]

Only a fool would use one to try to sneak around, blend in, or hide their identity.

Shh, don't tell them that. The point is to look obvious so all the good guys will pick a fight with you  :P

why not just blatantly change your appearance...wigs, makeup, clothing style...even way of speaking, and blend in that way? ^.^

cloaks are always getting caught on things anyways  :o

Monala's cloak is crimson with black embroidery, with the hood down most of the time, precisely because everyone else is a mysterious figure in a black cloak (in both PlaneShift and roleplay in general).

Also, I'd like to see cloaks with an optional feature where you can have the hood up or down (available in a vast rainbow of colours, of course ;)) implemented in-game some time (though I get the impression that it would make the Hydlaa look like Nibelheim from FFVII, when you've got all the cloaked and hooded figures going on about the Reunion), but never really thought about that enough to put it in the Wish List. If there's not already a thread for it, feel free to steal that one from me; I doubt I'll give the idea any more love.

Clothes and all that are planned but I doubt it will be soon. Cloaks require a new mesh for the body I believe and gettting a texture change takes enough effort on it's on let alone texture and mesh.

Yeah, it'd be difficult to do, but I still want to see my character dressed the way her description says she is (and a couple of other outfit changes I've planned for her if certain situations arise...).

I'll have to make a point to appear behind every black cloaked individual and bop them over the head with a club. They don't see a thing coming from under those huge shadowy hoods anyway. :P

Shh, don't tell them that. The point is to look obvious so all the good guys will pick a fight with you  :P

And the problem here is, half the characters look obviously evil ... so it isn't obvious anymore but just your regular every day thing. Even an uberpowerful hero would die of exhaustion within a day if they were to fight everyone who has a black cloak, daggers everywhere, wicked weapon or aura of evil. ::)

This is an unfortunate trend I've seen in PS. People go more and more out of their way to be unique and kick-ass until we're all walking gods who can obliterate anyone with a mere thought. Regular characters with more or less realistic abilities (and then I'm not talking about simple peasants but actual warriors and skilled craftsmen) are reduced to unimportant cannon fodder.

Anyways, I'll stop complaining now. People will do what they enjoy doing.

You notice that, however black cloaked Camazotz may be, he definitely does not have an aura of evil. Nor a wicked weapon. And he only has just the one dagger.

I don't want to change Camazotz's appearance too much as he has been like he is now for years, but he is different from everyone else who wears a black cloak.

I'll have to make a point to appear behind every black cloaked individual and bop them over the head with a club.

btw, that'd hurt.
It's a well known fact that black cloaks are warmer than anything else.
