Age of Conan appears to have some sweet scenery.
Can't check it out myself until I upgrade my 'puter, though. Bugger :\

What I thought could be fun is: Play one of these level-up-focused MMORPGS, but just don't level up all the time. Just roleplay. Maybe that's even more fun in a group.

Well, it doesn't really meet many of the requirements, but Shadow of Colossus is an awesome game for scenic stuff.
I haven't played it yet myself, but from what I've hear, it really is a great game. It's basically an exploration game with boss battles.. that's what I'm told, anyway. xD
Also, I just noticed that apparently it is for the PS2... but I got the impression my friend was playing it on his computer. Maybe you can get it for both? I dunno, ether way, you gotta play this game if you haven't already. :P (Though I'm not sure if it's hard to find these days or not...)

Maybe I can beg my friend to let me play it at his house.  :'(  *really loves this game*

From what I've seen Shaiya has some nice environments. I've managed to get it to work under linux with wine (though I had to get some stuff via winetricks (IIRC DirectX9 and probably Mono/VCR stuffs as well) to keep it from crashing too frequently)

Edit: Ah yeah, right. I forgot to mention the game's anti cheating protection is pretty much a root kit (Check GameGuard on Wikipedia to get more info about that)

I don't think any legal version was released for PC  ;), but SoC is surprisingly good. Most of the game consists of walking around a very scenic area by the sea, then finding giant monsters, climbing them and stabbing them to death. If you want scenic, it's amazing!
Have you told a Daylo 'I hate you' yet today? Do it. You'll get teleported to another area!

A longtime PS guild mate I know recently went to Shaiya. They really like it. We were also in Minions of Mirth for a while, which has beautiful outdoors and weather, and the basic client is free. So if you just want to roleplay and not level, Mirth has some nice spots. Another guildmate I play Mirth with is running it under Wine as well. Thank you, Anumesa. And thanks to Cyl for the mention of the rootkit in that game.
